How China's Path of Development Serves as a Model for Global Economic Growth

As the annual "Two Sessions" opened in China, CGTN released an insightful article tracing China’s innovative journey towards sustainable growth in recent years. This transformational route, driven by green initiatives, demonstrates how the country has redefined its development models, presenting insights for other emerging economies striving for similar progress.

The Shift to Sustainability

The article narrates the story of the Huangyan Caves in Taizhou, Zhejiang province, which for centuries supplied stone for construction. However, the mining ceased in the 1980s, leaving behind massive empty caverns. The turning point for this area came in 2023 when a design team from Tsinghua University revitalized the site. Through structural reinforcement and innovative redesign, a once-neglected quarry evolved into a vibrant hub featuring art spaces, concert halls, and cafés. By the end of November that year, the area attracted over 500,000 visitors and earned approximately 11 million yuan (around 1.6 million USD) in tourism revenue.

Chinese President Xi Jinping emphasized the importance of development for improving people's lives during the 76th session of the UN General Assembly in September 2021. He proposed the Global Development Initiative aimed at prioritizing development, fostering human-centered policies, nurturing innovation, and promoting harmony between nature and society. This initiative aims to expedite the implementation of the UN's Agenda 2030 for sustainable development.

Modernizing Growth Models

Since 2013, China has enhanced its traditional growth model by gradually implementing a more modern economic governance approach focusing on green development and innovation. The Huangyan site is merely a shining example of this extensive transformation. Across the nation, cities and regions are tailoring their strategies to local conditions and uniquely leveraging their resources for industrial modernization.

Take Panzhihua, a city shaped heavily by mining. At one point, coal-related industries contributed to 78% of the industrial value creation in its western district. However, as this growth model became unsustainable, local authorities pivoted decisively towards green transformation. Thirteen companies with outdated capacities were shut down, 133 environmentally detrimental businesses were closed, and 109 industrial areas were repurposed. They redirected their industrial framework towards new materials, renewable energy, vanadium-titanium steel processing, and resource recycling.

As a result, from 2022 to 2024, carbon emissions and emission intensity have shown steady declines. By 2024, emissions reached 303,500 tons of CO2, while the annual intensity dipped by 24.8%. The district aims to become a carbon-free industrial zone within three years, focusing on breakthrough industries in advanced materials and new energy.

Other regions have also harnessed their cultural strengths to drive development. In Guizhou province, the grassroots football league known as “Cun Chao” grew into a national phenomenon, drawing over 5.19 million visitors and generating nearly 5.99 billion yuan in tourism revenue while creating 12,000 flexible jobs. Meanwhile, the coastal Aranya Community in Beidaihe, Hebei province, evolved into a creative hub hosting theater, music, and dance festivals, attracting designers and artists nationwide.

Global Economic Opportunities

As the world desires stability amidst rising protectionism and geopolitical tensions, China aims to provide stability through robust domestic growth while continuing its external engagement. Over the past five years, China has contributed approximately 30% of global economic growth annually, establishing itself as a leader in global economic performance. With a vast market of 1.4 billion consumers, there exists immense potential for products, services, and investments. The country has also been the largest trader of goods for several years.

Noteworthy international collaborations, such as those under the Belt and Road Initiative, have enhanced infrastructure and bolstered job creation in partner nations. Projects like the Jakarta-Bandung high-speed railway, the China-Laos railway, and the port of Piraeus in Greece exemplify the impact of cooperation on economic recovery.

Furthermore, China is continuously working to shorten its negative list for foreign investments while hosting significant platforms like the China International Import Expo to share market opportunities with global businesses.

Leading figures, such as Hamid Moghadam, co-founder of Prologis, have pointed out that the increasing demand from Chinese consumers presents tremendous opportunities, directly fueling growth for their companies. Rebeca Grynspan, UNCTAD's Secretary-General, considers China as a vital example of development in the 20th and 21st centuries and acknowledges the valuable lessons drawn from its experiences.

In summary, China’s journey of sustainable development and its innovative approaches not only enhances its economy but also serves as a beacon for other nations striving for growth in today’s complex global landscape.
