Maryland Residents to Receive Additional Energy Relief Bill Credits in February

In a significant move to assist families grappling with rising energy expenses, Potomac Edison has announced that more than 247,000 residential customers in Maryland will automatically receive additional bill credits starting in February 2026. This initiative is a continuation of the state’s Legislative Energy Relief Refund program established by the Next Generation Energy Act passed in April 2025, aimed at providing financial support to households dealing with escalating electricity costs.

“Energy costs have posed challenges for many families, and we believe these credits will provide much-needed relief,” stated Jim Myers, President of FirstEnergy's West Virginia and Maryland operations. He highlighted the company’s commitment to offering resources and programs throughout the year to aid customers in managing their energy expenses.

Eligible customers who were recipients of the first round of credits distributed in September 2025 will automatically qualify for this second round in February. The amount credited to each household is determined by their average electricity usage over the preceding year, categorized as follows:
  • - Households using less than 570 kWh will receive $45.32.
  • - Households consuming between 570 and 1705 kWh will receive $52.82.
  • - Households with usage exceeding 1,705 kWh will see a credit of $60.32.

To be eligible for these credits, customers must maintain an active residential electricity account as of November 1, 2025, and have documented electricity consumption from September 1, 2024, to August 31, 2025. The credits will be applied automatically; there’s no need for customers to enroll or fill out applications. Furthermore, the credits are financed through contributions made by utilities and electricity suppliers as per Maryland's renewable energy laws, ensuring that they will not incur additional costs for customers.

In addition to these credits, Potomac Edison has a range of year-round programs in place to support customers in reducing their electricity bills and improving energy efficiency. These offerings include various assistance programs, tools for saving energy, and rebate opportunities. Residents can find more information about these resources on the Potomac Edison website, where they can explore bill assistance options as well as energy efficiency programs and tips to save energy.

Potomac Edison serves approximately 285,000 customers in seven counties across Maryland, alongside 155,000 customers in the Eastern Panhandle of West Virginia.
