Unique Perspective on the Life of a Buddhist Sculptor in the Musical ASURA

Dive into the World of 'ASURA'

The Musical Creator Unit, Sumireiro, is set to launch a groundbreaking new musical titled 'ASURA', scheduled to run from July 1 to July 5, 2026, at the Zamza Asagaya theater in Suginami, Tokyo. Tickets for the show will be available for general sale starting May 16, 2026, at noon through the Kanfetti ticketing platform.

A New Perspective on the Life of a Buddhist Sculptor

This musical revolves around the life of a little-known Buddhist sculptor whose masterpiece, the Ashura statue, prominently resides at Kōfuku-ji Temple in Nara. The statue is notable for its eight representations, which include not only the Ashura but also other figures like Ganapati and Karura, all of which came to life at the behest of Empress Kōmyō about 1300 years ago. The creation of these statues remains shrouded in mystery, prompting questions about the sculptor's identity and their intricate backstory.

In a moment of serendipity a few years ago, the creators stumbled upon an article proposing that the Ashura may have been modeled after a female figure. This notion resonated with them, especially as they had often visited and admired the Ashura statue's slender physique, six elongated arms, and youthful beauty. The gentle sadness that lingers in the statue's expression inspired the team to expand their narrative into uncharted territory about the potential lives and struggles of the sculptor.

While historical records attribute the creation of the Ashura statue to two prominent figures—Buddhist sculpture master Shōgun Manpuku and painter Hata Uyo—very little documentation exists regarding their lives, keeping much of their stories mysterious. This gap in historical knowledge is where the creators of 'ASURA' have chosen to infuse their own imaginations, crafting a narrative that centers around nameless artisans and their enduring human experiences.

Inclusive and Diverse Creative Vision

In forming the creative unit, Sumireiro, head writer and director Kazuki Kariyama teamed up with composer Mari Nishide and choreographer Kei Kikuchi, cultivating a collaborative environment that welcomes diversity in performance backgrounds. The unison of different stories and experiences is fundamental to their artistic philosophy—a bridge between people and cultures, filled with heartfelt messages.

This commitment to inclusivity is also reflected in their previous project, the musical 'Aiyou ni Inochi o Nasu', which received accolades, including the Mini Theater Award at the Musical Awards Tokyo 2024 pre-season. The unit is dedicated to crafting a theatrical landscape in Japan where musicals are recognized as a distinct art form and accessible to all audiences.

A Production with a Heart

Despite the summertime performance, the creators assure audiences that every aspect of the show will be prepared with care and thoughtfulness. With an open theater space, they invite everyone to experience this emotional journey through the eyes of the unnamed sculptor. Kazuki believes that as long as there is empathy among people, stories can transcend time, bringing forth universal values of love and understanding.
