Remembering 9/11: Sewa International's 25th Anniversary Commemoration

Sewa International has marked a significant milestone by commemorating the 25th anniversary of the September 11 attacks, an event that profoundly impacted the nation, with a series of over 14 commemorative ceremonies and 50 service events spread throughout the United States. This initiative brought together a diverse group of stakeholders, including community leaders, public officials, military personnel, and volunteers, all united in a spirit of remembrance and service.

Honoring Heroes and Victims

The remembrance events primarily aimed to honor the memory of over 3,000 lives lost during the tragic attacks in 2001, as well as to pay tribute to the heroic efforts of first responders, police officers, and firefighters who acted valiantly in the face of danger. In Chesterfield Township, New Jersey, one of the most notable ceremonies brought together more than 250 attendees at a memorial that the Sewa South Jersey Chapter helped establish in 2024. Keynote speaker Colonel Kevin E. White, Commander of the 514th Airlift Wing, offered heartfelt reflections on the bravery displayed in the aftermath of the attacks.

"The sacrifices made by Americans and our partners demonstrate an undying bravery and a commitment to the relentless freedom that can never be confined," Colonel White emphasized during his address. His words underscored the importance of collective resilience in the face of adversity.

Among other speakers, Bryan A. Branson, President of the Armed Forces Heritage Museum, shared poignant personal reflections on the enduring impact of the day on American society. He encouraged attendees to 'come together in a spirit of remembrance and unity, reflecting on the resilience that arose from tragedy.' He emphasized, 'We must honor the victims and ensure their memories live on.'

State Senator Latham Tiver echoed these sentiments, reminding those present of the ongoing lessons and values that the events of 9/11 impart. He appealed for daily actions of care and pride within the community to foster a brighter and more united future.

A Day of Commemoration and Service

The ceremonies did not end with memorial speeches; they were complemented by a series of community service projects designed to give back and reflect the spirit of unity that emerged following the attacks. Sewa Houston hosted a special 9/11 Day of Commemoration at the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Hall in Houston, emphasizing service as a crucial component of remembrance. The events across various locations incorporated activities such as food distribution, park cleanups, yoga sessions, and mental health workshops, all aimed at reinforcing community bonds and promoting collective healing.

In California, the Bay Area Chapter organized a comprehensive commemoration and day of service at the Milpitas Tech Center. This gathering honored not only victims but also veterans, first responders, and key community partners. Participants engaged in activities that fostered community and reflection, including the Pledge of Allegiance, the National Anthem, and quiet moments of respect and mindfulness.
