Meiji Initiates Greener Future with Hazel Nut Forest Planting Ceremony

Meiji's Hazel Nut Forest: A Sustainability Initiative

On May 23, 2023, Meiji Co. participated in a significant planting ceremony for the Hazel Nut Forest in Ueda City, Nagano Prefecture. As a leading producer of nut chocolates for over 50 years, Meiji is committed to fostering sustainable agriculture by growing hazelnuts in an environment optimally suited for this nut in the Nagano region. This initiative not only aims to promote local agriculture but also enhances the relationship between the company and the community.

Ceremony Overview

The planting ceremony was held following Meiji's generous donation of 200 hazelnut seedlings to Ueda City. This project embodies the company's philosophy of sourcing quality ingredients from domestic cultivation. Local community members joined representatives from the Ueda Municipal Government, the Shinshu International Music Village Area Liaison Council, Maruko Regional Community Center, and the Maruko Regional Educational Office, making the event a true collaboration.

During the ceremony, participants actively planted the donated hazelnut seedlings, marking a pivotal first step toward creating a rich and sustainable forest for future generations. The event also included the unveiling of a commemorative plaque, symbolizing their hopes for the Hazel Nut Forest’s future. Throughout the ceremony, a warm and friendly atmosphere prevailed, with all participants coming together for a group photo to capture the moment.

About the Hazel Nut Forest Project

The Hazel Nut Forest project aims to cultivate the donated seedlings collaboratively with the local community. Meiji believes in nurturing the seedlings beyond mere donation; the company is committed to overseeing their growth alongside local residents and assisting with beautification and land management around the planting area. This initiative seeks to enrich both the environment and local agricultural practices, reflecting a partnership where community and business can coalesce for a sustainable future.

Encouragement from Local Officials

Ueda City Vice Mayor, Takayuki Kosaizawa, delivered an address highlighting the importance of this initiative. His words emphasized the role of local government and businesses in fostering environmental sustainability and supporting local agriculture, creating a future where the community thrives.

The Students’ Contribution

Prior to the planting ceremony, students from Maruko North Junior High School participated in preparing the site, highlighting the importance of youth involvement in such environmental projects. This engagement emphasizes the need to instill values of sustainability and environmental stewardship in future generations.

The hazelnut seedlings were sourced from Furu Sato Agricultural Processing Co., which shares Meiji's vision of transforming the future of Nagano's agriculture over the coming century.

As the event concluded, it was clear that the Hazel Nut Forest represents much more than just a planting initiative; it symbolizes a collective hope for a greener future. Meiji's commitment to sustainable practices will not only enhance the local ecosystem but also foster a sense of community ownership and pride in this project. This will ensure that future generations can continue to enjoy the benefits of a thriving, harmonious environment.

In the years to come, the Hazel Nut Forest is expected to flourish, becoming a vital resource for both the local community and the environment, marking a step toward ecological responsibility and sustainable agriculture in Japan.
