Kyoka Tanno's Exhibition: "Shell, Stone, Me"
Introduction
From July 25 to August 18, 2025, Arflex Restore in Setagaya, Tokyo, will host the art exhibition "Shell, Stone, Me" by Kyoka Tanno. This exhibition is a part of the "LIFE with ART project," which aims to highlight the harmonious relationship between art and interior design. As a prominent artist known for her book illustrations and dynamic designs, Tanno's work promises to captivate visitors with its blend of bold patterns and emotive craftsmanship.
Artistic Vision
Kyoka Tanno's artwork is characterized by its striking use of black acrylic paint and intricate designs reminiscent of paper cutting and printmaking. Her pieces embody a unique blend of strength and the subtle imperfections of handmade art. Tanno's creations draw inspiration from natural elements, such as shells and stones, inviting viewers to engage with the "presence" of nature in her art.
In her words, "When I touch shells and stones, I feel a response in my heart that resonates with the layers of time accumulated within them. There is a part of us—our bones, nails, and teeth—that is intrinsically linked to these natural forms. Perhaps this is why I often feel an urge to return to the ocean—a silent place where my inner 'shell' or 'stone' seeks refuge. In nature, I experience a sensation of my contours melting away, accompanied by fragments of time that differ from my own."
Through this exhibition, Tanno aims to illustrate the gentle fluctuations that occur between the body and nature, and between the inner self and the outside world, all expressed through the subtle transition from light blue to black.
