illycaffè Introduces the In Minor Keys Art Collection at Frieze New York
illycaffè Unveils the In Minor Keys Collection
In a groundbreaking move, illycaffè is introducing its latest illy Art Collection titled In Minor Keys at the notable Frieze New York art fair. This remarkable collection features original creations from four esteemed artists, showcasing the fusion of quality coffee and contemporary art. The artists, Alice Maher from Ireland, Werewere Liking from Cameroon, Thania Petersen from South Africa, and British-Bangladeshi Mohammed Z. Rahman, have transformed the iconic illy cup into a canvas that reveals global voices and narratives.
At the illy coffee bar located within the fair, visitors can not only immerse themselves in the artistic experience but also enjoy a selection of expertly crafted beverages including espresso and cappuccino, all served in the beautifully adorned cups that have been the hallmark of illy's artisanal commitment for over three decades. Notably, a range of new cups from the In Minor Keys collection will not only be on display but will also be available for purchase—a perfect blend of art and functional design.
Since its inception in 1993, the illy Art Collection has emphasized the brand’s dedication to the artisanal aspect of coffee. The initiative began when artists were invited to interpret the illy espresso cup, conceived by designer Matteo Thun in 1991, into compelling works of art. The In Minor Keys collection takes its name from the overarching theme of Biennale Arte 2026, where illycaffè is honored to serve as the main sponsor. This year's biennale director, Koyo Kouoh, emphasizes themes of listening and diversity through art, making this collaboration particularly poignant.
The featured artists represent diverse artistic backgrounds and approaches, reflecting a wide spectrum of contemporary thought. Maher's art employs ancient myths and human forms, while Liking focuses on communal rituals enhanced by vivid colors. Petersen intricately combines textile elements with botanical representations, and Rahman utilizes a mix of visual rhetoric and text as a form of political commentary. Together, they create a rich tapestry of perspectives that resonate with the current global climate.
Cristina Scocchia, CEO of illycaffè, remarked on the significance of this collection: "The illy Art Collection dedicated to In Minor Keys symbolizes our ongoing dialogue with Biennale Arte 2026 and pays homage to Koyo Kouoh’s vision of plurality in the arts. These artistic expressions serve as cultural crossroads, reaffirming our mission to use art as a vessel for awareness and connectivity."
The In Minor Keys collection is currently available for purchase at the illy coffee bar during the Frieze New York fair and will soon be accessible via their official website for art enthusiasts worldwide. Pricing is set at $170 for a set of 4 espresso cups, $190 for a set of 4 cappuccino cups, and $36 for individual espresso cups by each artist.
