Aarhus, Denmark - May 11, 2026 - Johnson Controls, recognized globally for its advancements in thermal management and building systems, has made a significant movement in boosting its European presence. The company celebrated the opening of an upgraded facility in Holme, Denmark, designed to enhance production and testing capabilities of high-capacity heat pumps and chillers to meet the rising demand across Europe. The recent upgrades bring additional production space of 2,300 square meters alongside an 1,800 square meter customer experience and testing center that adheres to the latest standards set by the European Heat Pump Association (EN 14511). Such resources will empower Johnson Controls to design, build, and validate high-capacity solutions for district heating, public infrastructure, and various industrial applications, including those that serve critical environments like research campuses, healthcare facilities, and food and beverage operations.
The inauguration event was attended by notable figures including Richard Lek, President EMEA at Johnson Controls; Benthe Klokkerholm, Vice President of Manufacturing Operations HVAC/R, EMEA; Dan Jørgensen, EU Commissioner for Energy Housing; and Mayor Anders Winnerskjold of Aarhus, demonstrating the importance of this facility not just for the company but for local job creation as well. Johnson Controls anticipates that the expansion will result in the creation of over 100 local jobs, strengthening the regional economy while contributing to the technological advancement of heating solutions in Europe.
“This expansion underlines our unwavering commitment to manufacturing critical technologies within Europe,” stated Richard Lek during the ribbon-cutting ceremony. The company plans to assist municipalities and energy-intensive sectors in electrifying heat, which will subsequently lower operational costs and emissions.
Heating is a significant energy consumer in Europe, accounting for more than 60% of energy use in industries. This reliance not only increases costs but also burdens resources that could be allocated towards innovation and enhancing competitiveness. The innovative heat pump technologies developed at the Holme facility promise to transform wasted energy into affordable, low-carbon heating by leveraging natural sources such as wastewater, seawater, and geothermal energy.
Having made substantial strides, Johnson Controls heat pump solutions had saved customers approximately 32% in heating energy costs and reduced emissions by 55% in 2025. Such accomplishments underline the urgent need to scale tested and efficient technological solutions.
The Holme facility specializes in producing customized Sabroe-branded heat pumps and chillers, while also remanufacturing aftermarket and marine spare parts. These products are designed utilizing low Global Warming Potential (GWP) refrigerants, in anticipation of upcoming EU regulations set to take effect between 2027 and 2030.
Benthe Klokkerholm remarked, “This site has served as a foundation for heating and cooling innovation since Thomas Sabroe founded the business here in 1897. With this expansion, Aarhus strengthens its status as a center of excellence for district heating technology, delivering immense value to customers throughout Europe.”
Johnson Controls has successfully delivered large-scale heat pumps to numerous clients across Europe, including Vattenfall in Berlin and Energie Baden-Württemberg in Germany. With future projects slated for launch in areas such as Hamburg, Neustadt in Holstein, and Zurich in 2027, the Holme facility plays a crucial role in supporting these endeavors.
This expansion not only solidifies Johnson Controls’ presence in Europe but also significantly contributes to the reduction of carbon emissions, setting a benchmark for the industry in sustainable energy solutions.
