JA Mitsui Lease Collaborates on Battery Storage Initiatives in Japan
On September 25, 2025, JA Mitsui Lease Corporation, headquartered in Chuo-ku, Tokyo, announced its involvement in battery storage projects in Mito, Ibaraki Prefecture and Hamamatsu, Shizuoka Prefecture in partnership with Kansai Electric Power Co., Inc. and Sparks Group Inc.
Overview of the Projects
The Mito Battery Storage Facility aims for a total capacity of 50MW and 175.5MWh, with commercial operations expected to commence in June 2029. Meanwhile, the Hamamatsu Battery Storage Facility is slated to provide 30MW and 110.3MWh, targeting to start operations by June 2028. Both projects are designed to support the growing demand for renewable energy solutions in Japan.
As the reliance on renewable energy sources like solar and wind increases, their power generation can vary significantly due to weather conditions. This mismatch often leads to excess energy during certain periods, necessitating mechanisms for output curtailment to maintain stability in the energy grid. Battery storage systems play a crucial role by charging during surplus conditions and discharging during shortages, thereby enhancing the balance between supply and demand in the electrical grid.
JA Mitsui Lease Group has made it a strategic priority to evolve its business model under the mid-term management plan named ‘Sustainable Evolution 2028’. This plan positions energy transition as a growth area. With previous initiatives in renewable energy and battery storage projects, such as the one launched in Sapporo, Hokkaido in March 2025, the group is committed to fostering sustainable energy practices.
