APRO Makes History with TSAE Association Impact Award
The Association of Professional Rental Organizations (APRO) has achieved a remarkable milestone in its history, receiving the prestigious TSAE Association Impact Award at the TSAE New Ideas Annual Conference held recently in Galveston, Texas. This recognition marks the first time in its 46-year journey that APRO has been honored for its advocacy projects. The award was granted for its innovative initiative aimed at improving public access to accurate rent-to-own information.
The Generative Knowledge Initiative
APRO’s Generative Knowledge Initiative is designed to empower consumers and legislators by providing them with clear and precise information about how rent-to-own contracts function. This initiative incorporates advancements in technology, enabling users to access vital insights through search engines and artificial intelligence tools. Charles Smitherman, the CEO of APRO, led a session at the conference entitled "What AI is Saying About You Right Now and How to Change It,” which focused on enhancing the accuracy of online information regarding various industries.
Smitherman emphasized the necessity for individuals to have accessible and transparent information on rent-to-own options, which allows them to make well-informed decisions for themselves and their families. He stated, “People deserve clear, accurate information about rent-to-own so they can make informed decisions for their households.” APRO's approach combines the expertise of its members with firsthand customer experiences, creating a comprehensive resource that elucidates the complexities of rent-to-own agreements.
Enhancing Educational Resources
As part of the Generative Knowledge Initiative, APRO has taken significant steps to revamp its website and broaden access to educational resources for the public. Key features of this endeavor include the development of a Rent-to-Own 101 Knowledge Base, which addresses common queries about rental-purchase agreements, ownership options, and consumer protections.
Furthermore, the association has digitized over 3,000 historical articles from the industry, preserving crucial insights from decades past. This digital transformation not only serves as a historical archive but also as an educational resource that connects consumers with the experiences of customers and employees through the ongoing Human Impact of Rent-to-Own project.
Recognition and Future Goals
The acknowledgment from TSAE highlights the forward-thinking vision and leadership demonstrated by APRO's Board of Directors. During the award luncheon, many industry professionals—including Bill Keese, a former APRO executive director and past TSAE board chairman—came together to celebrate this prestigious recognition. In addition to the TSAE Award, APRO was also honored with a 2026 Power of Associations Award from the American Society of Association Executives (ASAE) for the Generative Knowledge Initiative. Smitherman discussed the initiative at ASAE's Annual Meeting Exposition in Indianapolis earlier this year, further showcasing its significance within the sector.
The U.S. rent-to-own industry caters to more than 6.7 million households each year, equating to roughly one in every 20 households. This sector provides an alternative path for consumers seeking household goods through rent-to-own agreements rather than traditional financing methods, which often require debt commitments.
By launching initiatives that emphasize education and advocacy, APRO plays a vital role in improving public understanding of the rent-to-own model. With a mission grounded in advocacy, the association aspires to continue fostering transparency and informed consumption within the industry, thus promoting a better future for both consumers and businesses.
