Ruinart Unveils Innovation with Ruinart Blanc Singulier Edition 19
MHD Moët Hennessy Diageo, located in Chiyoda, Tokyo, has announced the release of Ruinart's latest non-dosage cuvée,
Ruinart Blanc Singulier Edition 19. This exceptional product embodies the philosophy of harmony with nature, showcasing the unique aromas of Chardonnay that climate change has brought forth.
A Testament to Tradition and Innovation
Founded in 1729, Ruinart is recognized as the world’s oldest Champagne house. For centuries, it has perfected the art of capturing the charm of Chardonnay, known for its delicate, fresh, and refined taste profile. With the evolution of climate conditions over the last two decades, where the region's average temperature has risen considerably, the harvesting of grapes has been affected.
Ruinart has taken climate change as both a challenge and an opportunity. Under the leadership of Chief Winemaker Frédéric Panaïotis, the winery has spent nearly a decade researching the unique characteristics emerging in some Chardonnays due to these climatic shifts. This led to the creation of a new cuvée,
Blanc Singulier, with the first experimental blend introduced in 2017 and the formal launch of Edition 18 in 2018.
The Distinctive Character of 2019
The year 2019 was particularly extraordinary, marked by three heatwaves and an unusual growing season. Days exceeding 30°C occurred for 23 consecutive days, resulting in a record short growing cycle of just 81 days. The exceptionally warm conditions gave rise to Chardonnay grapes rich in aromatic diversity, offering notes reminiscent of white fruits such as nectarine and pear, combined with hints of lemon, pomelo, angelica, honeysuckle, saffron, and smoky spices.
With a radiant golden hue adorned with pale green reflections, the wine features a fresh mouthfeel. As it unfolds, the juicy texture reveals the essence of nectarine and pear, a crisp acidity from pomelo, and a finish that lingers with a delightful bitterness akin to grapefruit and mineral quality.
Philosophical Reflections from the Winemaker
Frédéric Panaïotis articulates the winery's stance as a wine producer: “We must humbly learn from the changing climate and adapt our techniques to continue revealing the individuality of Champagne’s terroir. Edition 19 tells the story of the shifting climate in Champagne through its diverse aromatic changes.”
