Keio University and SPACETIDE Launch Special Course on Space Business

Introduction



Keio University, in collaboration with SPACETIDE, is set to unveil a groundbreaking special lecture series titled "Introduction to Space Business." This initiative, supported by the Ministry of Education, aims to nurture talent and equip professionals with the essential knowledge to thrive in the rapidly evolving space industry. Over a three-year period, this program will combine theoretical insights with practical applications, culminating in a robust educational structure designed to address the needs of an expanding sector.

The Space Industry Landscape



Recent years have seen a notable acceleration in the commercialization and democratization of the space industry. This growth is characterized by an influx of new startups and an increase in government funding for space-related endeavors, leading to a myriad of innovative business opportunities. As a response, there is a growing demand not only for experts within the space sector but also for professionals from various fields to engage in space business activities. Thus, SPACETIDE has taken the lead in fostering an inclusive environment that encourages interdisciplinary collaboration and engagement.

Course Objectives



The primary goal of this course is to provide participants with a comprehensive understanding of the foundational knowledge required for the space industry. By attending the lectures, participants will not only gain theoretical insights but also develop a sense of confidence and awareness of how their own expertise can contribute to the vibrant space sector.

The course will consist of both on-demand lectures and in-person sessions, enriching the learning experience. The on-demand content will include a study of the history, policies, laws, and technologies associated with space business. In contrast, the in-person classes will provide hands-on learning through case studies, including guest lectures from industry entrepreneurs and practical workshops. A highlight will be the analysis of companies like Synspective, which recently went public, allowing participants to gain invaluable insights from real-world examples.

Detailed Course Schedule



  • - Day 1: February 22, 2026 (Sunday) - 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM
Overview of the space industry and career development, case studies on space business.

  • - Day 2: March 8, 2026 (Sunday) - 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM
Discussions on macro trends in space business, business development strategies, and workshop sessions.

  • - Day 3: March 22, 2026 (Sunday) - 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM
Lectures delivered by startup founders, followed by a comprehensive wrap-up of the course.

Additionally, attendees will have access to approximately 180 minutes of online lectures throughout the program to reinforce their learning.

Venue and Registration



The lectures will be held at the Keio University Mita Campus, specifically in the North Annex. This course is open to both professionals and students interested in the realm of space business. Notably, participation is free of charge. Interested individuals can register via the Google Form provided, with applications accepted until January 22, 2026. If the number of applicants exceeds capacity, a lottery will be held.

Meet the Instructors



Masayasu Ishida


The co-founder and CEO of SPACETIDE, Masayasu Ishida, aims to promote space business and facilitate ecosystem formation. He has significant experience in the industry, having organized Japan's first international space business conference.

Seiko Shirazaka


Seiko Shirazaka has an extensive background in aerospace engineering, having worked on several major projects, including those for Mitsubishi Electric and the European Space Agency. He is currently a professor at Keio University, where he also leads the SDM research department.

Michiko Ashizawa


An accomplished CPA, Michiko Ashizawa has led numerous corporate transformation projects. As an associate professor at Yokohama City University and now Keio University, she focuses on entrepreneurial education and fostering innovation.
