Shanghai Electric Concludes Training Program for Thar Project Employees

Shanghai Electric has recently brought to a close an intensive eight-day training program aimed at empowering employees involved in Pakistan's Thar Block I Energy Integration Project. This initiative, designed to enhance the skills of participants, involved twenty employees who were exposed to various facets of energy and industrial development through interactive learning experiences.

Focus on Practical Learning

The training program, held in Shanghai and Beijing, emphasized hands-on learning methodologies and was crafted under Shanghai Electric's commitment to cultivating skilled professionals in the energy sector. Employees, including management and technical staff, engaged in seminars and workshops focusing on the company’s corporate culture, advanced technologies, and more. Participants even visited the Shanghai Boiler Works manufacturing plant to gain insights into state-of-the-art production methods.

Zia ul Qama, a project manager at Thar, expressed her enthusiasm about the experience: "Observing China's rich culture while learning about Shanghai Electric's operations was enriching. This course has motivated me to strive harder towards both the organization's goals and my personal aspirations in academia."

Strategic Importance of the Thar Project

The Thar Block I Energy Integration Project has been operational since February 2023. This project plays a pivotal role in meeting Pakistan's energy needs, boasting an annual generation capacity of nine billion kilowatt-hours, sufficient to power nearly four million households. Beyond merely being an energy supplier, the project reflects Shanghai Electric’s dedication to sustainable industrial growth.

Moreover, the company has taken significant steps to foster an inclusive workplace culture. By promoting targeted initiatives that provide women with increased opportunities, Shanghai Electric is contributing to a more equitable work environment in the region, highlighted by their recent recognition for empowering women and advocating gender equality by the Employers Federation of Pakistan and the International Labour Organization.

Awards for Sustainability and Inclusivity

Shanghai Electric’s efforts have not gone unnoticed, as they received the “Contributors to Shared Prosperity” award at the 16th annual Corporate Social Responsibility Summit, held in August 2023. This accolade marked the tenth anniversary of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), further underscoring the company’s commitment to social responsibility and sustainability amidst its industrial pursuits.

This training initiative represents a broader commitment by Shanghai Electric to enhance local talent in Pakistan and support the sustainable development of the country's energy sector. The success of such programs not only empowers employees but also strengthens the infrastructure necessary for future energy demands, aligning with both national interests and global sustainable objectives.

In conclusion, as Shanghai Electric continues to foster local expertise through initiatives like this training program, it sets a precedent for how international energy companies can engage effectively with local communities to promote not just economic growth but also a culture of inclusivity and innovation. By investing in human capital, Shanghai Electric paves the way for a more resilient and sustainable future in Pakistan’s energy sector.
