Shanghai Electric Launches Sino-Pakistan Academy of Excellence for Engineers
On November 24, 2025, Shanghai Electric officially inaugurated the Sino-Pakistan Academy of Excellence for Engineers in a ceremony that was held simultaneously both online and offline across multiple locations in China and Pakistan. This initiative aims to cultivate internationally competitive engineering talents in line with the strategic goals of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI).
The Academy was established as a collaborative effort between Shanghai Electric and Shanghai Dianji University, marking a significant step towards strengthening technological and cultural exchanges between China and Pakistan. During the opening event, representatives from the Thar Block-I integrated coal mine and power plant project and Shanghai Dianji University signed a collaboration agreement that initiates the first phase of the educational program.
Objectives of the Academy
The creation of this Academy reflects Shanghai Electric’s commitment to fostering versatile talents equipped with solid theoretical foundations, engineering practices, international perspectives, and intercultural collaboration skills. Zhu Zhaokai, President of Shanghai Electric Group, highlighted the necessity of such an initiative amidst significant transformations in the global industrial environment. He stated, “The establishment of the Academy is a substantial move towards supporting the deep integration of industry, academia, research, and application.”
The Academy is not just a platform for education; it aims to create a robust international system for talent development, focusing on advanced manufacturing and practical teaching methodologies, along with the shared resources of academic staff.
High Standards of Education
Gong Siyi, President of Shanghai Dianji University, emphasized the Academy's role as a key foreign exemplary project. By integrating high-quality educational resources, the university aims to uphold high standards in talent development systems, education quality, and overall service support. The strategic plan is to transform the Academy into a vital bridge for enhancing friendship and technological collaboration between China and Pakistan.
As the first international program for engineering talent driven by enterprises under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), the Academy will offer customized master’s degree programs tailored to the requirements of the Thar project, particularly in the fields of energy and electrical engineering. Utilizing a dual mentorship system that pairs students with professors and industry professionals, participants will engage in solving real-world challenges by merging theoretical knowledge with practical experience.
Commitment to Innovation and Talent Development
Over the past few years, Shanghai Electric has underscored systematic talent development while strategically planning to enhance cooperation with academia, promoting an innovative ecosystem that focuses on globalization and advanced technological integration. Since its opening in 2024, the Academy has centered on nurturing technological experts and cultivating high-caliber professionals.
The Academy’s first flagship initiative, the Technical Experts Symposium, serves as a premier forum for leading professionals and academics to share insights, technical collaboration, and talent development strategies. So far, five sessions have taken place, focusing on cutting-edge technological trends and practical engineering insights.
In the first half of 2025 alone, Shanghai Electric invested CNY 2.546 billion in research and development, representing a year-on-year increase of 9.4%. This investment is significant, amounting to 4.7% of the company's total revenue, with nearly 39.5% allocated to developing emerging sectors.
Shanghai Electric is devoted to speeding up innovation, placing tremendous importance on talent as its most critical strategic resource. The company will continue to reform its development system to ensure the formation of a strong and well-structured team.
