Mars Reaches New European Decarbonization Goal with Wind Energy Contract in Sweden

Mars Achieves Renewable Energy Milestone in Sweden

Mars Incorporated has announced a significant achievement in its sustainability journey with a new contract that secures 70% of the annual production from the Kölvallen Wind Farm in Sweden. This new agreement is set to provide approximately 670 GWh of clean electricity each year, which will directly support Mars' operations and its value chain partners. This initiative is in line with Mars' broader strategy to advance decarbonization efforts across its full value chain.

The Kölvallen Wind Farm represents one of the largest commitments Mars has made to renewable energy in Europe, highlighting its ongoing efforts to implement long-term renewable electricity contracts. The wind farm, developed by Foresight Energy Infrastructure Partners, delivers 277.2 MW of installed capacity, enough to power approximately 95,000 households annually. Importantly, it is expected to achieve climate neutrality shortly after commencing operations.

Kevin Rabinovitch, Mars' Global Vice President of Sustainability, emphasized that this partnership with Foresight Group is a strong demonstration of Mars' ambition to support the renewable energy transition throughout Europe. He noted, “Through the Renewable Acceleration Program, we are making renewables the standard for our entire value chain, driving impactful change not only for our business but also for the communities and regions where we operate.”

The Kölvallen project's development was significantly bolstered by Mars' commitment, which provided the long-term security needed for construction and financing. Additionally, the wind farm is set to deliver local benefits, including the establishment of a community fund backed by the wind farm’s revenue, as well as job creation in the region.

Richard Thompson, a partner at Foresight Group, expressed excitement about the collaboration with Mars, pointing out that the Kölvallen Wind Farm will yield substantial environmental and economic benefits over its operational lifetime. He stressed the importance of projects like this in setting new benchmarks for community-focused renewable energy developments.

This new venture aligns with Mars' Renewable Acceleration Program, which aims to contribute to a total 10% reduction in its carbon footprint by 2030 compared to 2015 levels. The company previously initiated another contract related to their European Renewable Acceleration Program in 2025, which led to over 100 solar projects in Poland. Each of these contracts is instrumental in helping the company realize its ambitious sustainability targets.

With a legacy of over 100 years, Mars Incorporated operates numerous brands loved by consumers worldwide, including Royal Canin, Pedigree, and M&M's. The family-owned company is dedicated to fostering a sustainable future through its business practices, which is reflected in its guiding principles. The company advocates for quality, responsibility, mutual benefit, efficiency, and freedom, with the aim of creating a better world for people, pets, and the planet alike.

As Mars continues to make strides in renewable energy, the Kölvallen Wind Farm stands out as a testament to the company's commitment to sustainability and its broader environmental goals. With significant investments in both wind and solar power, Mars is paving the way toward a greener future and setting an example for other corporations regarding the importance of integrating renewable energy into business operations.
