University of Medicine and Health Sciences Integrates UWorld to Enhance Student Learning and Success

University of Medicine and Health Sciences (UMHS) Integrates UWorld into Curriculum

In a significant step towards elevating the standards of medical education in the Caribbean, the University of Medicine and Health Sciences (UMHS) has recently announced a partnership with UWorld, a leading platform for United States Medical Licensing Examination® (USMLE®) preparation. This collaboration aims to deepen the commitment of UMHS to student success by integrating high-quality educational resources directly into their curriculum.

Starting in May 2025, UWorld will be seamlessly incorporated into the Clinical Science Program offered in Maine. This integration is set to expand in September to include students in both EBS 5 and Med 4 on the St. Kitts campus, with future plans to fully include UWorld resources across the Basic Science curriculum. This initiative marks a unique developmental step, making UMHS the only Caribbean medical school to fully embed UWorld into their courses.

The integration of UWorld into the UMHS curriculum signifies more than just a simple enhancement; it provides students with access to a renowned suite of resources designed to prepare them for the USMLE. UWorld’s platform is known for its detailed explanations, realistic practice questions, and rigorous assessments. With these resources, students are equipped to master the knowledge and clinical reasoning skills essential for excelling in the USMLE, which is crucial for medical licensure in the United States.

President Warren Ross has stated, “Our top priority is preparing students to become skilled, compassionate physicians. By embedding UWorld into our curriculum alongside personalized learning plans and increased assessments, we provide our students with the best tools available for success on the USMLE and beyond.” This commitment is vital as higher USMLE scores correlate strongly with improved clinical performance, highlighting the importance of early and efficient preparation for budding medical professionals.

The redesigned 15-week Maine Integrated Program will incorporate UWorld resources alongside Kaplan Didactic Lectures and NBME self-assessments, all supported by faculty-led small group reviews. This structured and high-yield approach aims not only at facilitating knowledge acquisition but also at building confidence among students ahead of their Step 1 examinations.

In addition, UMHS plans to introduce a pilot review course in St. Kitts that integrates UWorld’s Step 1 resources into the EBS 5 and Med 4 curriculum. This initiative is backed by dedicated faculty mentors who will guide students through their studies, enabling them to take the Step 1 exam within three months following completion of the Maine Review Program. Future efforts include extending UWorld’s benefits into earlier semesters of Basic Science, ensuring comprehensive preparation for all medical students from the outset of their education.

Having recently achieved six years of full re-accreditation by the Accreditation Commission on Colleges of Medicine (ACCM) and proud of its low attrition rates coupled with a remarkable 96% student retention rate, UMHS is setting the bar high for Caribbean medical education. The results of their student-focused initiatives speak volumes, with an 87% overall Step 1 pass rate and a 91% Step 2 CK pass rate, indicating substantial success in preparing students for their future in the medical field.

UMHS alumni have successfully secured residency positions across the United States, including prestigious institutions like the Mayo Clinic, Yale, and Johns Hopkins, participating in competitive specialties such as Anesthesiology, Surgery, and Radiology. This accomplishment underlines the effectiveness of UMHS's educational programs and the strategic integration of UWorld resources.

Ross further explained, “Our integration of UWorld goes beyond updating our curriculum. It's part of a comprehensive strategy to uplift academic outcomes, fortify clinical readiness, and ensure our students can achieve their ultimate aim of becoming outstanding physicians.”

UMHS, founded in 2007, prides itself on offering a highly personalized educational experience that equips students with a Doctor of Medicine degree (MD). Students begin their foundational studies in St. Kitts before pursuing hands-on clinical training in the United States and Canada. With a firm commitment to student support that results in one of the highest residency placement rates in the Caribbean, UMHS continues to lead by example in medical education.
