International Collaboration Spotlight: Young Female Researchers at Okayama University
On October 7, 2025, Okayama University, located in the heart of Okayama City and led by President Yasunori Nasu, welcomed young female researcher Lucia Rivadeneira Barreiro from Ecuador. Lucia, a lecturer at Manabi Polytechnic University, was part of the UNCTAD-run "Young Female Scientist Programme in Japan" aimed at researchers from developing nations. This exciting initiative underscores the commitment of Okayama University to support global education and research.
During her courtesy visit, Lucia was joined by her supervising professor, Makoto Ota, from the university’s Graduate School of Environmental and Life Science. The meeting allowed for an insightful exchange of ideas focused primarily on Lucia’s research theme surrounding generative AI. President Nasu expressed his enthusiasm for this emerging field, noting its potential despite ongoing challenges like privacy concerns. “We are eagerly looking forward to your research contributions,” he commented.
Following the formal discussions, the group enjoyed a leisurely lunch meeting which deepened their mutual understanding and connection. In addition to academic exchanges, Lucia immersed herself in Japanese culture, participating in activities like wearing a kimono and tasting traditional matcha at Okayama Korakuen and Okayama Castle.
The collaboration between Okayama University and UNCTAD began in January 2020 when they established a comprehensive partnership agreement aimed at promoting human resource development for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through scientific and technological innovation (STI for SDGs). The
