How Temecula Coffee Roasters Transformed Label Printing with Epson ColorWorks Technology

Temecula Coffee Roasters and the Power of On-Demand Labeling

Established in 2017, Temecula Coffee Roasters has taken significant strides since launching as a modest coffee roastery aimed at supporting a boarding school in East Africa. Today, this family-owned business caters to thousands of brands through its private label initiative, demonstrating substantial growth while maintaining its commitment to quality and social responsibility.

To keep up with increasing demand, Temecula Coffee Roasters recognized the need for a more efficient way to manage label printing. They turned to Epson’s ColorWorks on-demand color label printers, revolutionizing their process for creating customized labels. Bryan Rauch, the Chief Operating Officer, emphasizes the importance of on-demand printing, stating that it allows them to assign appropriate labels to over 17,000 SKUs in real-time. This instant printing capability has become a favorite among their clients due to the lack of required minimum order quantities.

In the early days, the label printing process was cumbersome, relying on a standard desktop printer that produced multiple labels at once regardless of necessity. This inefficiency led to a significant amount of waste – Rauch estimates that around 10% of their labels were reprinted, consuming extra ink and paper. With the implementation of ColorWorks printers, that figure has sharply declined to just 1%, marking a remarkable improvement.

The quest for a suitable printing solution led Temecula to collaborate with Pacific Barcode, a local partner specializing in labeling technology. The goal was to discover a printer that matched speed, quality, and cost-effectiveness. Scott McKenzie, president of Pacific Barcode, believed ColorWorks fit their needs perfectly, facilitating the creation of vibrant, high-quality labels.

Currently, Temecula Coffee Roasters processes roughly 1,000 pounds of coffee daily. They offer an array of coffee sizes, from two ounces to five pounds, in varied formats, necessitating a considerable catalog of labels and designs. On busier days, the team can print up to 2,000 labels. With five or six ColorWorks printers operational at any given time, they benefit from the 'spare-in-the-air' service that ensures replacements are promptly provided when needed.

This flexibility not only enhances efficiency but also empowers Temecula's private label clients, allowing smaller retailers to appear as professionally established enterprises. Rauch underscores the quality of their output, noting that clients enjoy the capability to print full-color photos and high-resolution graphics that enhance their branding.

As Stevi Sterns, product manager at Epson America, remarks, businesses can realize significant time and cost savings by only printing labels as needed. Temecula Coffee Roasters serves as an effective example of how ColorWorks technology can streamline labeling processes, boost product visibility, and contribute to overall business success.

The satisfaction of both Temecula’s customers and staff is evident through their glowing feedback regarding the quality and efficiency of the produced labels. Rauch concluded, “Great labels with full photo-quality prints from an easy-to-use solution – almost as great as the coffee we produce.”
