Luup's New Unlimited Ride Pass

A significant development has emerged for users of Luup, the electric micro-mobility sharing service. Starting on April 29, 2025, customers will have the opportunity to purchase the new unlimited ride pass—valid for both three and twelve hours—directly through FamilyMart's mobile prepaid platform. This initiative aims to enhance accessibility to Luup's services while promoting sustainable urban transportation options.

Service Overview

Luup offers a comprehensive sharing solution for electric bicycles and scooters, allowing users to navigate cities conveniently from one docking port to another via their smartphone application. Currently, the service operates in twelve designated areas, featuring over 12,800 docking stations nationwide. With the expansion of docking stations, users can now travel more freely to various destinations, addressing the growing demand for cost-effective long-term usage plans. Beginning in August 2023, Luup launched the option for customers to acquire unlimited ride passes online, enhancing its service offerings.

Partnership with FamilyMart

FamilyMart has actively participated in the promotion of bike sharing programs since October 2020, recognizing the potential of type of service to attract customers into their stores. Following a strategic capital and business partnership established with Luup in April 2022 (Source: Luup Press Release), they have intensified efforts to install Luup stations while mutually driving customer traffic to their locations.

The addition of purchasing options for unlimited ride passes through FamilyMart's smartphone prepaid system is aimed at making Luup's services even more accessible. Customers can now conveniently buy these passes using cash or the FamilyPay app at any FamilyMart location where Luup stations are installed. This adjustment is anticipated to improve convenience for weekend outings, sightseeing, and leisurely trips.

How to Purchase

Interested customers can make their purchases by visiting the smartphone prepaid website, where they will input the required information and receive a barcode. At FamilyMart, they simply present this barcode at the cash register for scanning. Payments can be made in cash, and after completing the transaction, the customer will acquire a PIN code via screen display or an email address that they provided during the purchase process.

Purchases will be available at FamilyMart outlets across Japan; however, the three and twelve-hour passes will only be valid in specific cities, including Tokyo, Osaka, Yokohama, Kyoto, Kobe, Nagoya, Hiroshima, Utsunomiya, Sendai, Fukuoka, Kitakyushu, and Hamamatsu. There may be limitations in some areas, and not all FamilyMart locations will participate in this program.

Additional Information

To utilize Luup, customers must register for an account through the Luup app and set up a credit card; the unlimited ride passes cannot be used alone. Users are encouraged to download the app, available for iOS (16 or later) and Android (OS 10.0 or newer), to start enjoying improved mobility within the city.
