A Day of Advocacy: A March for a Nuclear-Free Japan
On September 23rd, a significant event unfolded at Yoyogi Park in Shibuya, Tokyo, as the "Say Goodbye to Nuclear Power" nationwide rally took place, attracting around 4,500 participants. Organized by the Pal System Federation, led by Chairman Atsuyuki Shibusawa, the rally aimed to urge the realization of a society independent of nuclear power while raising critical issues regarding the climate crisis.
The event was part of the ongoing efforts by the "Say Goodbye to Nuclear Power 10 Million Action" campaign, which has been holding nationwide meetings every March and September. These gatherings aim to raise awareness about nuclear energy and other energy-related issues that directly impact people's lives and safety. Attendees had the opportunity to enjoy live performances and listen to speeches from various activists and organizations dedicated to these causes.
One keynote segment of the event was a panel discussion featuring voices from various sectors. Among them was Atsuhiko Iizumi, the president of Nakano Mushroom Garden and a producer of shiitake mushrooms from Tsukuba City in Ibaraki Prefecture. Sharing his personal struggles as a farmer affected by the Fukushima nuclear disaster, Iizumi spoke candidly about the challenges he faced, including contamination fears leading to a significant decline in sales. Despite these adversities, he highlighted his determination to educate the public on the safety and quality of his products.
Having resumed shipments after taking measures to ensure safety, Iizumi expressed gratitude towards consumers who supported him throughout this difficult journey. He asserted, "I want to raise my voice for a society without nuclear power to prevent such incidents from happening again."
Marching for Change
After the speeches, participants divided into two groups and hit the streets of Shibuya and Harajuku, marching in unity. Armed with placards and banners, they called upon local residents, tourists, and shoppers to join their vision of a nuclear-free society. The vibrant atmosphere reflected a collective commitment to combat climate change and promote alternative energy solutions.
As the march progressed through iconic locations such as Miyashita Park and the bustling Shibuya Scramble Crossing, participants united in their calls for change, emphasizing the importance of energy transition and community engagement in shaping a sustainable future.
