American Library Association Kicks Off 150th Anniversary Celebration
The American Library Association (ALA) has officially embarked on its impressive 150th anniversary year, a significant milestone that celebrates a century and a half of empowering library professionals, promoting access to information, and defending the freedom to read. Established in 1876, the ALA has been an unwavering advocate for all libraries and librarians, making it their mission to ensure equitable access to library resources for everyone.
In reflecting on this important occasion, ALA President Sam Helmick emphasized, "Libraries are lifelines, shared public spaces, and engines of opportunity. Year-Long Celebrations
The ALA's celebrations will span the entire year of 2026, featuring key flagship events designed to honor the past while looking forward to the future. Kicking off the festivities is the 2026 Youth Media Awards (YMA), set to take place on January 26, 2026, at the Hilton in Chicago. This event will recognize outstanding books, videos, and materials specifically aimed at children and teens, covering more than 22 prestigious awards, including the highly coveted Newbery and Caldecott medals.
