NFL Players Call for Action Against Violence and Persecution in Nigeria

NFL Players Urge Washington to Combat Violence and Persecution in Nigeria

In a powerful statement of solidarity, more than 60 current and former NFL players, coordinated by Sports Spectrum, have sent a letter to President Trump and key Congressional leaders. The letter brings to light the dire situation in Nigeria where religious and ethnic persecution has become rampant, particularly at the hands of the Fulani Ethnic Militia (FEM). Among the notable signatories are NFL stars such as Brock Purdy, CJ Stroud, TreVeyon Henderson, Kirk Cousins, Jameis Winston, and Benjamin Watson, alongside influential coach Tony Dungy.

The letter highlights the increasing violence that has plagued Nigeria for years, noting that the Nigerian Army has failed to effectively address the ongoing attacks. It emphasizes the lack of attention from both the U.S. and Nigerian governments towards the FEM, which is now identified as a leading perpetrator of mass atrocities and forced displacements in Nigeria.

"A new approach is urgently needed," they state in the letter, calling for a comprehensive strategy that includes dismantling the FEM, expanding humanitarian aid for millions of displaced Nigerians, and appointing a dedicated Ambassador-at-Large for International Religious Freedom at the U.S. State Department. This official would be critical in advancing the U.S. government's efforts to promote religious freedom and address the crisis in Nigeria.

Sports Spectrum President Steve Stenstrom has passionately voiced the underlying message of the letter, declaring, "Every human being deserves to worship freely without fear of being kidnapped, burned, or murdered." He urges America to align its foreign policy with its foundational moral values, advocating for protection and support to those in peril.

The sentiment expressed in the letter resonates beyond the world of sports, as these influential players feel a profound responsibility to advocate for those whose voices have long been neglected. They stress the urgency of taking action and implore U.S. leaders to utilize their platforms to champion human rights and religious freedom.

The letter concludes, "We ask you, as leaders of this nation, to use the full weight of your offices to defend the fundamental right to live and worship freely, sending a clear message that the United States will not stand by while Nigerians are targeted, terrorized, and killed because of their faith. The lives at stake cannot wait."

This initiative showcases the growing influence athletes can wield in addressing global issues, reminding us of the critical intersection between sports and social justice. As NFL players are increasingly stepping up to advocate for change, their efforts in raising awareness about violent persecution in Nigeria draw attention to the urgent need for international intervention and support.
