The International Congress of Basic Science Kicks Off in Beijing with Over 1,000 Participants

The 2026 International Congress of Basic Science (ICBS) officially commenced on August 10, 2026, in Beijing, attracting more than 1,000 participants, including renowned scientists, researchers, and young academics from both China and around the globe. This significant event, themed "Advancing Basic Science for Humanity," spans two weeks and features over 500 academic sessions covering various branches and interdisciplinary directions of basic science.

In the forefront of the agenda are cutting-edge topics like generative reasoning of large-scale models, computer vision, human-computer interaction, and quantum information. Esteemed international scientists have been invited to deliver lectures and award presentations that showcase the latest global advancements and promote collaborative multidisciplinary innovation.

During the congress, various enriching activities will take place, such as high-level academic dialogues, youth engagement initiatives, and cultural and scientific exchange programs. Among the notable events are the "Math Night," "Physics Night," and "Engineering Night," where Fields Medal and Turing Award winners will gather to discuss pioneering trends and developments in their fields. Additionally, a newly launched Women in Science Forum will invite prominent female researchers to share their professional experiences, addressing the opportunities and challenges within scientific research. This forum aims to inspire more women in academia to reach new heights in scientific inquiry.

Moreover, the Congress will host a Basic Science and Artificial Intelligence Forum to delve into the primary obstacles and future trajectories of advancement in AI theory and industry trends. A highlight event will be the "Tsinghua Day," which invites world-renowned mathematicians and physicists to engage in conversations with young students at Tsinghua University, encouraging them to participate in basic science and explore the unknown.

One unique feature of this congress is the excursion titled "Explore Huairou," designed to give international experts insights into Huairou’s Science City, the International Conference Complex, the Mutianyu Great Wall, the Great Wall International Animation Valley, and the Doctor’s Farm. This excursion will offer scholars a firsthand glimpse of the innovative vitality and research ecosystem of the national comprehensive scientific hub, along with the ecological charm and cultural heritage of Huairou. It will also highlight how science and technology are driving rural revitalization, showcasing Huairou's achievements and its high-quality development as a demonstration zone for world-class strategic integration of science and technology.

This marks the fourth installment of the ICBS in Beijing, jointly organized by the Beijing Municipal Government, the Ministry of Science and Technology, the China Association for Science and Technology, and the International Consortium of Chinese Mathematicians. Overall, ICBS stands as a beacon for promoting scientific dialogue, collaboration, and innovation, reaffirming Beijing's commitment to supporting advancements in basic science through its dynamic academic platforms.
