Exciting Premiere of PLAIN's Debut Play 'Marie of 15th Street' in Tokyo

PLAIN's Debut Performance: 'Marie of 15th Street'

PLAIN, a new theatre company founded by actor Yui Inami from Gekidan Mingei and director Yuka Nishimoto from Bungakuza, is thrilled to announce its inaugural play, 'Marie of 15th Street.' The show will run from August 26 to September 1, 2026, at Zayu in Tokyo's Shinjuku district.

The playwright, Motoharu Yamazaki from Gekidan Garba, wrote the script specifically for this debut. This production is aimed at breaking the conventional boundaries of theatre companies, allowing fresh, collaborative creative expression.

Synopsis

The story centers around a man named Aoi who escapes from work on a whim, hitchhiking into unknown territories. Following him is Aoi, constantly bewildered by his reckless actions. During this chaotic escapade, they encounter a woman named Marie, a compulsive shoplifter who pleads for help: "Please, I mean no harm. I don’t understand why I do this. I find myself holding things I shouldn’t and running away. If I get caught now, it would be disastrous!" Despite Aoi's urging to keep their distance, Aoi decides to try and help Marie, setting off a chain of impulsive decisions that intertwine their lives further.

As Aoi and Marie’s compulsive natures resonate with one another, they form a complicated bond—a partnership that draws the attention of local police officers wary of Aoi’s strange behavior and a convenience store manager eager to hire him. As the consequences of their actions escalate, Aoi finds himself faced with a critical decision he must make, leading to unforeseen ramifications.

About PLAIN

PLAIN aims to redefine contemporary theatre by encouraging artists to transcend company limits and respond to current societal issues. The ensemble believes in 'rebirth of new theatre' through collaborative creativity, reflecting both the challenges and the vibrancy of modern life.
