Norte Conectado Program: Driving Digital Inclusion at COP30
The Entidade Administradora da Faixa (EAF) will introduce its groundbreaking initiative, the Norte Conectado program, at Casa Brasil during the highly anticipated COP30 conference. This innovative program aims to place digital inclusion and sustainable infrastructure at the center of vital discussions concerning climate justice and development in the Amazon region.
One of the program's remarkable characteristics is its method of installing fiber optic cables along the riverbed of the Amazon. This method not only facilitates high-speed internet access in remote municipalities but also minimizes deforestation and the need for large-scale infrastructure projects that often have detrimental environmental impacts.
A Transformative Initiative
With an estimated investment of R$ 1.6 billion, Norte Conectado is set to benefit over 10 million people across six states in the Amazon. The initiative plans to lay approximately 12,000 kilometers of underwater cables, establishing connectivity for more than 70 municipalities. This extensive network will aid in various sectors including telemedicine, education, public services, and regional economic growth.
Leandro Guerra, the CEO of EAF, emphasized the program's significance, stating, "Norte Conectado reinforces EAF’s commitment to public policies that enhance connectivity while preserving the forest. By utilizing the natural watercourses of the rivers, the program provides infrastructure with a lower environmental impact, aligning perfectly with COP30’s focus on sustainable development."
Thematic Panels and Discussions
During COP30, EAF will host three thematic panels aimed at addressing key issues surrounding optical infrastructure, digital inclusion, and the role of 5G technology in regional transformation. These panels will gather government officials, researchers, telecommunications experts, and local organizations to share insights and foster collaborative discussions. Additionally, a podcast series will be recorded featuring interviews and conversations centered around connectivity in the Amazon.
