Operation Dry Water Returns to Promote Safe Boating
As the Independence Day weekend approaches, a significant nationwide initiative is set to unfold aimed at combating impaired boating.
Operation Dry Water (ODW) will take place from July 3 to 5, 2026, engaging law enforcement agencies across the United States in a concerted effort to educate boaters about the dangers of operating under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
Increasing Awareness and Enforcement Efforts
The campaign, running for several years now, is designed to enhance safety on the water during one of the busiest boating weekends of the year. According to statistics from the U.S. Coast Guard, alcohol remains a leading factor contributing to recreational boating fatalities. This initiative serves to remind boaters that responsible choices are paramount before heading out to sea.
The ODW campaign will kick off with a National Kickoff Event in
Lake Havasu City, Arizona, hosted by the California State Parks Division of Boating and Waterways along with various law enforcement agencies and recreational safety partners. This kickoff event will take place on June 29, 2026, at 11 AM MST and will be followed by a public outreach event that encourages local community members to engage with boating safety professionals.
Engaging the Community
During the outreach event on June 30, attendees will have the opportunity to learn about the risks associated with impaired boating and receive helpful resources that promote safe practices on the water.
Chris Jones, Chair of the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators (NASBLA), emphasized, “Every year, Operation Dry Water reminds boaters that the safest decision they can make before leaving the dock is to boat sober.” This commitment to enforcing boating safety is critical in minimizing incidents that can result in tragedies.
Throughout the ODW weekend, enforcement agencies will be ramping up their patrols on waterways. They will focus on both educational campaigns promoting sober boating and strict enforcement of BUI (Boating Under the Influence) laws. Statistics indicate that since ODW’s inception in 2009, nearly
8,000 impaired boat operators have been apprehended, and over
3.3 million boaters have been educated about the importance of boating sober. This is a testament to the campaign's significant impact.
Understanding the Risks
Alcohol consumption can severely impair judgment and reaction times, and these effects can be exacerbated by environmental elements on the water, such as sun exposure and unpredictable weather. Incidents of falls overboard, collisions, injuries, and fatalities are often linked to boating under the influence. This underscores the crucial necessity for both operators and passengers to remain sober for safe boating experiences.
The ODW campaign aims to create a well-informed society of boaters who recognize the serious implications of impaired boating. By working collaboratively, local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies are strengthening efforts to ensure that everyone enjoys their time on the water safely.
A Call to Action
As ODW gears up for another impactful year, boaters across the nation are encouraged to take part in promotional activities and pay heed to the campaign’s messages regarding sober boating. The ongoing commitment and partnership among law enforcement agencies reflect a unified vision for safer waterways where every person can enjoy their recreational boating activities responsibly.
