Global Leaders and China Unite in Madrid for an Equitable Future
On December 13, 2024, the prestigious Imperial Springs International Forum took place in Madrid, marking its ninth edition and the first held outside of China. Under the theme "Collective Action for One Future," the forum brought together more than 130 global leaders, including former heads of state, scholars, and dignitaries from over 40 countries. This gathering was co-organized by the Club de Madrid and aimed to address the significant transformations currently impacting the international system, with an emphasis on bolstering dialogue and fostering collaboration among nations.
The forum's agenda was heavily focused on promoting a more inclusive global order and addressing existing tensions, including the threats posed by nuclear arms, trade wars, and unresolved regional conflicts. Groundbreaking dialogues underscored the urgency of revitalizing multilateral efforts, enhancing international cooperation, and rebuilding trust between nations—cornerstones for achieving a stable and equitable future.
Hu Chunhua, Vice President of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, delivered a message from President Xi Jinping, confirming China's commitment to multilateralism. He stated that the forum has adhered to this principle since its inception, fostering extensive discussions on global governance and actively sharing China's perspectives on international issues. Spain’s Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, Diego Martínez Belío, emphasized Spain’s role in fostering bilateral ties with China, stressing that the responsibility for generating inclusive economic growth transcends national borders.
The discussions at the forum also highlighted pressing global challenges such as inflation, protectionism, and fragile supply chains. Key leaders underscored the need for reform within the World Trade Organization (WTO) to stabilize international trade and strengthen multilateral financial institutions like the G20 and development banks to promote financial stability and alleviate debt burdens in low- and middle-income countries.
Participants unanimously recognized the necessity of implementing fair international tax systems, restructuring the debts of vulnerable nations, and establishing inclusive financial frameworks. Discussions also pointed to the critical importance of developing global governance structures for artificial intelligence and green technologies, ensuring equitable access and preventing monopolization.
Central to the forum was the commitment to implement the Pact for the Future, adopted at the UN's Future Summit earlier in 2024. This pact addresses vital themes such as sustainable development, security, climate action, and digital cooperation while emphasizing accountability and resource mobilization.
In closing remarks, Danilo Türk, President of the Club de Madrid, stated, "This edition has demonstrated that even in a fragmented world, dialogue and cooperation are the most effective tools to address our common challenges. The collective actions we take today will shape the global governance of tomorrow." The forum not only provided a platform for significant dialogue but also reinforced the importance of unified efforts to pave the way for a sustainable and equitable future on a global scale.
