In a significant development for Finnish telecommunications, DNA Finland, the nation’s second-largest mobile and fixed broadband provider, is expanding its multi-gigabit services to lower-density multi-dwelling units (MDUs). This expansion is made possible through the integration of Harmonic's SeaStar™ optical node technology, which allows DNA Finland to penetrate areas that have been traditionally overlooked due to technical and financial barriers.

Historically, deploying infrastructure to serve multi-dwelling units where subscriber counts are limited has posed a challenge for internet service providers. The cost associated with installing dedicated nodes for these units often rendered such projects economically unviable. However, the SeaStar optical node changes that narrative. By allowing multiple low-cost optical mini nodes to be connected through point-to-point fiber links, the technology enables DNA Finland to utilize existing coaxial wiring within buildings, thus significantly reducing infrastructural burdens and operational expenses.

As expressed by Markus Lehtiniemi, the design team lead at DNA Finland, the SeaStar node presents a cost-effective solution to the broadband connectivity issues faced in lower-density MDU markets.
