The Importance of Japanese Schools Abroad

Japanese schools outside Japan serve as essential institutions providing a curriculum comparable to that in Japan, enabling students to receive full-time education in a supportive environment. As of April 2025, there are 94 schools across 49 countries and regions, with approximately 17,000 students enrolled. Originally established for children anticipating returning to Japan, these schools now cater to a diverse population, including those from international marriages and permanent residents.

During the seminar, participants will gain insights into the needs and educational challenges identified through the educational practices at the Bangkok Japanese School, one of the largest overseas Japanese schools in the world. The session will focus particularly on how to selectively implement the elements of the International Baccalaureate (IB) education framework, especially the core concept of "International-mindedness".

Addressing Educational Diversity

As the demographic of students becomes increasingly diverse, representing various cultural backgrounds, Japanese schools abroad face new challenges. The seminar will discuss how educators can nurture students’ abilities to engage with this diversity positively and constructively. It is crucial to adapt educational practices to help students navigate the tension between Japan's educational standards and the local values of their host country.

The practical research shared in this seminar aims to embrace diversity as a fundamental reality and promote each student’s unique identity. Working collaboratively with educators from the Bangkok Japanese School, the seminar will highlight lessons developed to foster International-mindedness, showcasing transformations in student thinking moving from a self-referential viewpoint to a multifaceted understanding of global perspectives.
