Heath Wassem Joins Golf Performance Academy in Connecticut
The Golf Performance Academy (GPA) recently announced the addition of Heath Wassem as the new Director of Golf on its Connecticut campus. This appointment comes during the Spring 2026 semester and marks a significant step in the academy's aim to bolster its coaching team and enhance its elite athlete development model.
Wassem is no stranger to the world of golf. With an impressive background in coaching, instruction, and player development, his experience will be instrumental in leading students through their golfing careers. Under his guidance, GPA aims to prepare its students not just as athletes but as well-rounded individuals ready for success both on and off the golf course.
Located in Ridgefield, Connecticut, the GPA has been steadily growing since the launch of its new campus in Port St. Lucie, Florida, which opened in August 2025. This expansion reinforces GPA's commitment to offering thorough training programs to aspiring young golfers from grades 8 through 12.
Commitment to Excellence
As Director of Golf, Wassem will work closely with Manuel Bermudez, the GPA’s Director of Golf based in Florida. Together, they will implement a full-year program aimed at advancing students’ golf skills through physical training, mental coaching, and preparation for tournaments. This structured approach means a low ratio of students to coaches, with a focus on individualized attention; there’s an excellent 6:1 student-to-coach ratio at both campuses.
Highlighting the success of the Connecticut program, Wassem noted the achievements of four seniors who recently graduated and are now competing at various collegiate levels. Wassem himself played Division 1 college golf and has actively pursued qualifications for the PGA Tour.
Building Connections
Lee-Anne Gilchrist, CEO of the Golf Performance Academy, expressed enthusiasm about Wassem's arrival, stating, "Heath brings decades of golf experience to our students and embodies the commitment necessary for success in golf at the highest levels." His past role as Head Professional at Fenway Golf Club in Scarsdale, NY, alongside his long tenure with the Metropolitan PGA, has cultivated valuable relationships that will benefit the academy and its students.
Residing in Mount Kisco, NY, Wassem balances his professional life with family; he is a father to three young adult children, showcasing that he deeply values both family and career. As GPA expands its reach into Florida, the academy remains dedicated to attracting competitive young golfers who are eager to significantly enhance their skills using cutting-edge technology and professional coaching.
Looking Ahead
GPA strives to provide not only world-class golf training but also a comprehensive educational experience that emphasizes the importance of academic achievement and personal growth. As Heath Wassem settles into his new position, it's clear that his leadership will be vital in shaping the next generation of golfers.
