On April 7, 2026, the Skoll Foundation proudly announced the three organizations selected for the esteemed Skoll Awards for Social Innovation:
ChildLife Foundation,
SmartStart, and
Indus Action. This award, valued at $2 million, aims to support nonprofits with a demonstrated history of transformative social change in tackling complex global challenges.
Each of these organizations has demonstrated innovative solutions to pressing social issues, and their work exemplifies what can be achieved through public-private partnerships, thoughtful community engagement, and systemic approaches.
Key Contributions of the Awardees
ChildLife Foundation
In Pakistan, where childhood mortality rates soar with nearly 1,000 children dying each day from treatable conditions such as pneumonia, ChildLife Foundation has taken decisive steps to enhance pediatric emergency care. By collaborating with the government, they have improved emergency room facilities across public hospitals, bringing advanced equipment and highly trained staff to the forefront of healthcare. Furthermore, their 24/7 telemedicine network links over 300 district hospitals with pediatric specialists, benefiting 90% of the population. This initiative has resulted in a tenfold reduction in child mortality in the managed emergency rooms, with ambitions to provide essential care to 20 million children annually.
Indus Action
In India, despite allocations of $150 billion annually for over 5,000 social protection programs, complexities in processes prevent nearly 800 million citizens from accessing their entitled benefits. Indus Action is actively tackling this gap with a comprehensive approach that enhances governmental service delivery. They utilize technology to create citizen-centered open-source solutions while conducting research to optimize benefit distribution. By engaging both citizens and state agencies, Indus Action aims to transform constitutional commitments into tangible outcomes, striving to connect 30 million citizens with crucial education, health, and financial assistance by 2030.
SmartStart
In South Africa, more than one million children aged 3 to 5 lack access to quality early childhood education, which hampers community economic inclusion. SmartStart empowers underemployed community members to turn their homes into licensed early learning businesses. By offering training, materials, regulatory support, and peer networking, SmartStart’s social franchise model makes quality early education both affordable and accessible. With the partnerships they have built, SmartStart has become the leading early learning network in South Africa, reaching 160,000 children every week and aiming to impact one million children by 2030.
