JPI Seminar: Innovations in Sustainable Business

The Japan Planning Institute (JPI) is excited to announce an upcoming seminar titled "Creating Systems for Continuous New Business Generation and Concrete Examples," which will take place on November 19, 2025. This event will feature esteemed speakers from Tokyu Construction Co., Ltd., including Yoshitaka Yanagihara, Senior Manager of the Innovation Promotion Department, and Koichi Fujita, Department Manager of the Value Creation Promotion Office.

Background of the Seminar

As we witness an aging population, the demand for products like disposable diapers has soared, leading to concerns over waste management. The Ministry of the Environment estimates that by 2030, the amount of disposed diapers will reach approximately 2.6 million tons, constituting around 7% of general waste. The JPI seminar aims to address how to mitigate the environmental impacts associated with this growing issue.

Key Highlights of the Seminar

1. Innovative Waste Management
The seminar will introduce an alternative to the common incineration method used for disposing of used diapers. Instead, hydrolysis treatment will be discussed, promoting material separation, which is expected to significantly reduce CO2 emissions compared to traditional methods.

2. Utilizing By-products
Following treatment, the resulting sludge will undergo dewatering, and the seminar will showcase how using fly larvae for digesting organic waste can generate organic fertilizers. These fertilizers can then be transformed into organic potting soil and sustainable greening materials.
