Costa Rica's Strategic Investment Drive in Europe Targets Agritech and Digital Transformation

Costa Rica's Strategic Investment Drive in Europe

As businesses globally reassess their supply chains and seek new avenues for growth, Costa Rica's Trade & Investment Promotion Agency (PROCOMER) has embarked on an ambitious mission to enhance its appeal as a premium investment destination in Europe, particularly targeting high-value sectors like agritech, global services, and tourism infrastructure.

This initiative included participating in significant events such as the World Seed Congress 2026 and the Shared Services Outsourcing Week (SSOW) Europe. These gatherings are recognized as pivotal platforms for discussing advancements in business services, digital transformation, and artificial intelligence.

Laura López, the CEO of PROCOMER, spearheaded this European agenda with a clear vision to cultivate international relationships and diversify foreign direct investments (FDI) flowing into Costa Rica. “We are not just waiting for opportunities; we are actively engaging with industries that are molding the future of the global economy,” López stated, emphasizing Europe as a critical region for diversifying investment sources to attract sophisticated operations. In 2025, nearly half of the 55 new investment projects secured by Costa Rica originated from countries other than the United States, illustrating its growing importance as a viable platform for global companies.

A standout moment during the mission was PROCOMER's inaugural participation in the ISF World Seed Congress 2026 held in Lisbon, which is a principal gathering for the seed industry. Bringing together over 1,000 stakeholders from agriculture, biotechnology, and research sectors, the congress allowed Costa Rica to showcase its advantages as a hub for agricultural innovation.

During the congress, meetings were held with notable global firms interested in research and development in agriculture, plant breeding, biotechnology, and overall agritech projects. Costa Rica touted its robust year-round agricultural production capabilities, specialized workforce, diverse microclimates, and a regulatory environment conducive to agricultural R&D as key differentiators that position it favorably in the global marketplace.

In addition to the agricultural focus, PROCOMER organized the Costa Rica Investment Day, which centered on global business services and digital technologies. The event coincided with the SSOW Europe 2026, one of the premier forums discussing global business services, shared services, automation, and innovation. Costa Rica's strategic positioning as a nearshore destination for high-value service operations was highlighted through its bilingual talent pool and a strong record of operational success in global services, alongside a vibrant ecosystem gearing toward digital solutions and technology.

The mission extended to Madrid with the Costa Rica Investment Day – Spain, organized in collaboration with the Confederación Española de Organizaciones Empresariales (CEOE). This multisector event provided a platform to promote a variety of investment opportunities across sectors like tourism infrastructure, agribusiness, advanced manufacturing, life sciences, and semiconductors. The intent was clear: to reinforce Costa Rica's positioning as a reliable and sophisticated investment haven that adheres to the latest global trends in sustainability, innovation, and job creation.

Through these concerted efforts, Costa Rica's PROCOMER is not just seeking passive investment but is actively fostering an environment that encourages high-value investments in crucial sectors, reinforcing its status as a key player in the global economic landscape. This strategy aligns with the ongoing shifts in worldwide supply chains and the increasing desire for stable, sustainable, and innovative investment opportunities.
