Celebrating Collaboration: FamilyMart and Anime Tourism Association
In a groundbreaking move,
FamilyMart, the well-known convenience store chain, has made history by becoming the first retail business to join the
Anime Tourism Association. This partnership marks a significant step in bridging the gap between anime fans and local Japanese culture, aiming to enhance the travel experience for domestic and international tourists alike. With aspirations of celebrating its 45th anniversary in September 2026, FamilyMart is set to invigorate its brand with a fresh approach in alignment with five fundamental themes that emphasize challenge and excitement.
The collaboration with the Anime Tourism Association focuses on promoting the
"88 Must-Visit Anime Locations in Japan", a list designed to unite fans with the real-life locales depicted in their favorite series. By transforming FamilyMart stores into immersive anime experiences, this initiative promises to turn ordinary shopping trips into vibrant pathways of exploration for anime aficionados. The first of these themed stores is set to launch on
March 17, 2026, featuring the anime
"Durarara!!", a series that captures the essence of Ikebukuro, Tokyo.
Bridging Realities: Thematic Store Experience
FamilyMart's innovative approach fuses shopping with entertainment by placing its stores at the center of anime pilgrimage routes. To offer a unique shopping experience, they will wrap store interiors to reflect the worlds of various anime titles that feature their stores. The initial store,
FamilyMart Sunshine West, located in the heart of Ikebukuro, will be adorned with elements of
"Durarara!!", providing customers with a new way to engage with both the series and the community surrounding it.
- - Store Location: FamilyMart Sunshine West
- - Address: 3-3-2 Higashi-Ikebukuro, Toshima City, Tokyo
- - Implementation Period: March 17, 2026 - Late May 2026 (tentative)
As local and international tourists embark on their anime pilgrimage, FamilyMart's thematic explorations aim to offer not only a sense of nostalgia but also a revitalization of community engagement, boosting local tourism through their partnership with the Anime Tourism Association. The
"88 Must-Visit Anime Locations" serves as a prominent framework under which FamilyMart will operate its themed stores throughout 2026, with an aim to promote regional revitalization as well.
Celebrating Ikebukuro: The Setting of Durarara!!
The anime
"Durarara!!" is set against the backdrop of
Ikebukuro, with scenes carefully depicting its urban landscape. The series showcases diverse characters and intricate storylines fueled by the dynamics of modern urban life. By showcasing the
FamilyMart Sunshine West within the opening of the anime's second season, fans will be given the opportunity to immerse themselves into this beloved fictional universe. The overall aim is to create an interactive experience that resonates with viewers while enhancing their connection to real-life locations.
Expanding the Experience: Merchandise and Services
In addition to the store’s anime-themed decor, FamilyMart is also planning to offer special
limited-edition merchandise that fans can purchase exclusively at the themed store. Moreover, they will introduce
Famima Print, a service that will allow guests to print unique memorabilia via in-store multi-copy machines. Detailed information on the items and print services will be released as the launch date approaches.
About the Anime Tourism Association
Established in 2016, the Anime Tourism Association aims to promote regions tied to anime worlds and expand tourism initiatives by connecting anime fans with local culture. Every year, they compile and announce the latest list of must-visit locations based on global fan votes and coordinate with local authorities to solidify this connection.
A Commitment to Community Engagement
FamilyMart seeks to align its mission with the motto,
“With you, FamilyMart”, fostering a sense of community and continuity with its diverse customer base. By introducing novel concepts into their retail format, they envision becoming indispensable establishments within the neighborhoods they serve.
As they journey into this new phase, FamilyMart embodies its slogan,
“The Biggest Challenge”, by daring to venture beyond traditional retail practices and embracing the rich tapestry of Japanese anime culture.
