JA Solar Selected for the World's Largest Solar and Energy Storage Project in Abu Dhabi

JA Solar Selected for an Unprecedented Renewable Energy Initiative

On January 16, 2025, during the esteemed Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week (ADSW), Masdar, a leading voice in clean energy from the UAE, announced the selection of JA Solar as one of the preferred suppliers for the largest photovoltaic (PV) and energy storage project in the world. This groundbreaking initiative represents the world’s first large-scale solar and battery storage project designed to provide continuous renewable energy around the clock.

Founded in 2006, Masdar has been at the forefront of global renewable energy efforts, spearheading advancements in solar, wind, geothermal technologies, energy storage, and green hydrogen. With a mission aimed at achieving net-zero energy targets, Masdar has developed and invested in over 50 gigawatts (GW) of projects across more than 40 countries, significantly contributing to a sustainable future.

Located in Abu Dhabi, this record-setting project will feature an impressive 5.2 GW of PV capacity and a 19-GWh battery storage system, consisting of a northern site with 2.6 GW and a southern site capable of generating 9.5 GWh. Once operational, the project is expected to deliver a stable base-load of 1 GW of power daily, effectively reducing reliance on fossil fuels and minimizing greenhouse gas emissions. It also aligns with UAE’s Net Zero 2050 Strategy, marking a pivotal achievement towards the commitments made at COP28.

Abdulaziz Alobaidli, Masdar's Director of Operations, emphasized the transformative role of this project in clean energy deployment, stating, "This record-breaking project represents a significant leap forward in clean energy transformation. By addressing the intermittent nature of renewable energies, it will facilitate clean energy supply 24/7. As the largest and most ambitious project by Masdar to date, we are dedicated to partnering with the best possible suppliers who meet stringent quality standards. I look forward to collaborating with our selected suppliers to establish a new global benchmark in clean energy innovation."

Aiqing Yang, the Executive Chairman of JA Solar, expressed pride in deepening their partnership with Masdar for this monumental project, noting, "JA Solar is pleased to strengthen our collaboration with Masdar on this record-setting endeavor that signifies a monumental leap in the global clean energy transformation. As a company committed to advancing sustainable solutions, we share Masdar’s vision of enabling reliable and continuous clean energy. This project not only establishes a new global benchmark in energy innovation but also reinforces the critical role of high-quality cutting-edge technology in driving the transition to a low-carbon future. We are honored to contribute to this pioneering initiative and look forward to our partnership setting the standard of excellence in the renewable energy sector."

As this enterprise progresses, it will attract global attention, positioning Abu Dhabi as a leader in sustainable and renewable energy solutions. The collaboration between JA Solar and Masdar exemplifies the concerted efforts required to make clean energy accessible to communities worldwide.
