Saudi Arabia Welcomes Its First Specialized Art Storage Facility in Jeddah
Saudi Arabia's Groundbreaking Art Storage Facility
Saudi Arabia is on the cusp of a cultural renaissance as it announces the launch of its first specialized art storage facility, known as The Art Storage by ATHR. This significant achievement is the result of a collaborative effort between ATHR, one of the nation's premier contemporary art galleries, and Hasenkamp, a renowned art logistics specialist based in Germany. Set to officially open its doors on May 24, 2025, the facility is strategically located in the Al-Nakheel district of Jeddah, intentionally chosen for its elevated position that provides protection against flooding.
Museum-Grade Security and Climate Control
The new art storage facility is not just a storage solution; it is built to international museum standards, ensuring that the art it houses is maintained in pristine conditions. The building boasts a controlled climate environment where temperatures are kept between 20 and 22 degrees Celsius, with carefully regulated humidity levels. This meticulously regulated environment helps in preserving the integrity of the artworks. Moreover, the facility is equipped with a gas-based fire suppression system, eliminating the risk of water damage.
In addition to these high-tech features, the facility emphasizes security with dust protection measures, privacy protocols, and 24/7 surveillance. Access is strictly limited to authorized personnel, ensuring that the art remains safeguarded at all times.
Designed for Large Artworks
The infrastructure of The Art Storage is specifically designed to accommodate large-format artworks. This includes high ceilings, spacious doors, and well-planned transportation routes, all tailored to handle monumental pieces. There is also a dedicated showroom outfitted with museum-quality lighting, allowing for optimal viewing of the stored works. The facility further serves as a venue for events and previews, encouraging community engagement with art—beyond just passive storage.
Heritage Meets Innovation
Hasenkamp brings over 100 years of expertise in art logistics into this project. According to Thomas Schneider, managing director at Hasenkamp, the warehouse in Jeddah has been constructed to meet the demanding standards of international art collections, ensuring its acceptance and utility in the global art community.
Mohammed Hafiz, co-founder and managing director of ATHR, highlights the relevance of this facility as a part of a long-term vision to solidify Saudi Arabia's cultural infrastructure. He remarks, "With The Art Storage, we are establishing a secure nexus for art preservation while simultaneously creating an avenue for public engagement and experience of art."
An Experienced Team
The team behind The Art Storage comprises professionals with over fifty years of experience in the art handling, installation, and specialized packaging sectors. The facility hosts its own workshop for crafting custom-made crates, alongside administrative offices and visitor areas, promoting an accessible environment for art enthusiasts and professionals alike.
As part of this ambitious initiative, Hasenkamp has maintained a significant operational presence in the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia for more than twenty years, fostering a nuanced understanding of the region's evolving cultural landscape.
