Akerman Sparkling Wine: A Legacy from the Loire Valley

In the picturesque Loire Valley of France, the storied winery Akerman is set to begin distributing its fine sparkling wines in Japan starting in July 2025. This undertaking is a joint effort between JFLA Holdings and its subsidiary, Arcane Co., Ltd., both based in Tokyo.

A Pioneer of Loire Valley Sparkling Wine

Akerman has a rich history dating back to 1811 when Jean-Baptiste Akerman, a Belgian national, established his winery in Saumur, leveraging the unique terroir of the region to produce exceptional sparkling wines. During a time when many winemakers were still experimenting with production methods, Akerman notably commercialized his process, earning the title of a pioneer in Loire sparkling wines.

Evolution of a Beloved Brand

The second generation, led by Louis Ferdinand, played a crucial role in popularizing Loire wines globally, particularly in English-speaking markets. One of Akerman's flagship offerings, the 'Royale' cuvée, was once selected for use on international cruise lines, and it continues to symbolize the brand, enjoyed in top establishments worldwide.

In Spring 2024, Akerman plans to refresh its branding strategy, reorganizing its product line into three distinct categories:

• - Royale: The flagship cuvée reflecting history and elegance.
• - Emily Akerman: A classic line that serves as the heart of the brand.
• - Bulle Royale: A friendly, approachable option perfect for everyday enjoyment.

Commitment to Sustainability and Quality

Today, Akerman primarily utilizes its own vineyards, such as Les Dames de la Vallée, covering 104 hectares. Emphasizing sustainable development, the winery collaborates with partner growers and engages in numerous initiatives aimed at environmental protection. Akerman has also achieved HVE (High Environmental Value) certification and established a research center dedicated to continuous quality improvement.

Product Lineup and Launch Details

Akerman is set to introduce four sparkling wine varieties in Japan, slated for release in July 2025. These wines will be available in hotels, restaurants, airlines, department stores, gourmet shops, wine retailers, and wholesale distributors. The importing and distribution will be managed by Arcane, Inc.

- Grapes: 70% Chenin Blanc, 15% Chardonnay, 15% Cabernet Franc
- Tasting Notes: Fresh fruit flavors accompanied by the scents of lime and acacia flowers; smooth and well-balanced with delicate bubbles. Aged for 15 months.

3. Crémant de Loire Brut Millésime 'Emily Akerman' 2023
- Volume: 750ml
- Retail Price: 3,000 JPY (excl. tax)
- Grapes: 60% Chenin Blanc, 30% Chardonnay, 10% Cabernet Franc
- Tasting Notes: Named after the founder's wife, this cuvée showcases fresh fruit and floral aromas, aged for 24 months, offering richness and complexity.

4. Crémant de Loire Brut Millésime 'Royale' 2022
- Volume: 750ml
- Retail Price: 3,800 JPY (excl. tax)
- Grapes: 60% Chardonnay, 30% Chenin Blanc, 10% Cabernet Franc
- Tasting Notes: Made from grapes solely sourced from the Dames de la Vallée vineyard, it heralds notes of yellow fruits and spices, complemented by candied fruits and orange peel, all polished through 36 months of aging.

Akerman, with its legacy and commitment to quality, promises to bring a taste of French elegance to the Japanese market in 2025.
