BANC3 Launches State-of-the-Art RF Sensing Algorithm for Enhanced Threat Detection
BANC3 Unveils Cutting-Edge Algorithm for RF Threat Detection
BANC3, Inc., based in Princeton, NJ, has achieved a significant milestone in defense technology with its recently completed Department of Defense (DoD) product contract. The company has developed a Computationally Efficient Wideband RF Sensing Algorithm, which is poised to revolutionize how the U.S. Army's ground combat vehicles detect and identify radio frequency (RF) threats.
This innovative algorithm enhances the capability of military assets to operate effectively in complex and densely populated signal environments. Utilizing state-of-the-art Commercial Off-the-Shelf (COTS) technology, BANC3 has harnessed its software-defined receiver (SDRX) installed on the Intel Direct RF Agilex 9 multi-chip package (MCP). Testing has demonstrated its functionality across a broad RF spectrum, ranging from 10 MHz to 18 GHz, achieving real-time threat identification with an instantaneous bandwidth of 6.4 GHz.
The rigorous assessments included evaluating over 10,000 signal sequences, successfully achieving reliable threat signal recognition even amidst highly congested signal environments. This technological leap not only improves threat detection but also does so with remarkable efficiency.
Real-World Threat Modeling
BANC3's recent research sought to model actual RF threats that combat personnel may encounter. These include sophisticated radar systems, moving target indicators, and radio-controlled devices such as explosive remote detonators. This ensures that the algorithm is well-suited to address a full spectrum of tactical scenarios that could arise on the battlefield.
The SDRX architecture seamlessly integrates a Real-Time Spectrum Analyzer (RTSA) and Digital Instantaneous Frequency Measurement (DIFM). This allows for continuous monitoring of both time and frequency domains, significantly compressing the data gathered by ADC systems into concise spectrum and pulse descriptor words that enable swift threat correlation.
BANC3’s Vice President of Research and Development, Fred Ilsemann, articulated the company’s achievements, stating, “By harnessing the power of direct RF technology and computationally optimized algorithms, we have demonstrated an innovative approach to wideband threat detection without relying on additional resources such as GPUs. This breakthrough paves the way for next-generation battlefield awareness, ensuring our warfighters remain ahead of emerging threats.”
Babu Cherukuri, CEO of BANC3, emphasized that this advancement not only builds upon their existing technological foundations but also sets the stage for future innovations that focus on hardware-in-the-loop testing, performance optimization across an array of bandwidths, and broader real-world threat assessments. This initiative aims to accelerate deployment and reinforce the supply of mission-critical solutions to the defense sector.
