In a significant step for the biotechnology sector in South Korea, SK bioscience has received official approval from its Board of Directors for a substantial funding initiative. This follows the recent announcement from the Financial Services Commission, which identified SK bioscience as a key beneficiary of the Korea Growth Fund, granting the company KRW 300 billion (approximately USD 230 million) to expand its research and development (R&D) capabilities and accelerate the commercialization of its vaccine, GBP410.
SK bioscience has made history by becoming the first Korean company focused on novel drug and vaccine development to be selected for the Korea Growth Fund, which is aimed at promoting advanced industries including biotechnology. The financial backing will be instrumental in furthering the late-stage development of its innovative pneumococcal vaccine candidate GBP410, which is being co-developed with Sanofi. This vaccine is currently undergoing Phase 3 clinical trials, and the company is optimistic about announcing top-line results in the latter half of next year.
The funding acquired from the Korea Growth Fund will not only assist in the ongoing R&D of GBP410 but will also enhance SK bioscience's manufacturing capabilities and prepare the company for future commercialization endeavors.
