The two firms are currently advancing their collaboration in the marine industry, with a primary project slated to kick off in the fiscal year 2026 under the theme of 'Biologically Symbiotic Blue Infrastructure.' This initiative entails conducting thorough research through consultations with government bodies, local municipalities, and the construction sector to evaluate the market potential of titanium materials as blue infrastructure and developing a roadmap for actual societal implementation.

Background and Objectives: Bridging Diverse Technologies for Marine Conservation


Coral reefs, which emerged around 400 million years ago and predominantly inhabit tropical regions, play a crucial role in biodiversity. Despite covering merely 0.2% of the ocean's surface, coral reefs are home to approximately 25% of marine species. They provide essential services such as coastal protection, fisheries, construction materials, and even potential medicinal applications, contributing significantly to human society.

It is estimated that the economic value of coral reefs is around $375 billion annually (approximately 43 trillion yen). In Japan alone, around 450 of the 800 coral species found globally thrive, supported by an expansive maritime territory.

However, forecasts indicate that by 2040, climate change-related increases in sea temperatures may lead to the disappearance of 70-90% of coral reefs. Therefore, the conservation of these vital ecosystems is now recognized as a pivotal challenge for sustaining biodiversity and the economic value they generate.

The project capitalizes on titanium's exceptional biocompatibility and corrosion resistance. Previous Studies of Concept (PoCs) have suggested that titanium's properties are beneficial for promoting coral cell adhesion and skeleton formation, indicating substantial advantages in marine environments. Given titanium's resilience in marine conditions, it is identified as an essential material for sustained blue infrastructure applications.

With the signing of this agreement, both parties aim to create a comprehensive framework for titanium supply, impact assessment, and the development of local implementation models, thereby promoting the use of titanium for marine preservation.

The partnership aims to do more than just focus on coral conservation; it seeks to define a new societal paradigm where economic activities enhance nature instead of depleting it.
