Starting February 28, the theater will present a selection of her most iconic movies, reminiscing the journey of this extraordinary actress who starred in numerous acclaimed films during her career.
Born in 1947 in Ginza, Tokyo, Masako Izumi began her career as a child actress at the tender age of 10. In 1961, at just 14 years old, she joined Nikkatsu, quickly gaining fame alongside fellow actresses Sayuri Yoshinaga and Chieko Matsubara, collectively known as the “Nikkatsu Three”. Her charm and talent helped her secure a coveted spot in the hearts of audiences, especially in the youth film genre.
Izumi’s performance in the 1963 film
Hikou Shoujo (
Delinquent Girl) garnered significant acclaim both domestically and internationally, cementing her status as an acting powerhouse. Her portrayal was not only a critical success but became one of her most recognizable roles.
Beyond her extraordinary acting skills, Masako Izumi made headlines in 1989 when she became the first Japanese woman to reach the North Pole. This remarkable achievement showcased her adventurous spirit, making her a multi-faceted figure in Japanese culture—an actress and an adventurous pioneer.
The upcoming film series will present not just her representative works but also lesser-known gems where her unique charm, innocence, and charisma shine through.
