In a significant development for the energy sector, the largest battery energy storage system (BESS) in the Nordics, situated in Ånge, Sweden, has been officially commissioned. This monumental undertaking, powered by Sungrow's advanced PowerTitan 2.0 system, boasts a capacity of 70 MW / 160 MWh and aims to enhance the reliability of Sweden's power grid amidst the rapidly evolving energy landscape.

This colossal project, spearheaded by Delta Capacity and equipped with Sungrow's cutting-edge technology, is designed to tackle the dynamic challenges of the Nordic climate, capable of operating efficiently despite extreme temperatures and varying weather conditions. As the region transitions towards renewable energy sources, projects like Ånge are paramount in creating a robust power network.

Role of Ånge BESS in Sweden’s Energy Landscape


The Ånge energy storage system will play a vital role in stabilizing Sweden's power supply. It offers rapid response capabilities that are essential for frequency regulation and helps manage electrical supply and demand more effectively in the highly competitive Nordic power market. A recent report from SolarPower Europe highlights that as of 2025, Sweden and Finland had installed more than 1 GWh of new battery storage capacity, cementing their commitment to energy sustainability.

Samer Nameer, Country Manager for Sweden at Sungrow, emphasized the significance of the Ånge project: “Ånge exemplifies how large-scale energy storage can be implemented efficiently. Collaborating with partners like Delta Capacity is vital for expanding the renewable energy capacity in Sweden.”

Fast-Tracked Deployment for Energy Transition


The project is the result of collaboration between WOOD Company Renewables Sub-Fund and Delta Capacity, showcasing rapid development from inception to operational status within just 15 months. Located in bidding zone SE2, the facility also enhances the overall balance of Sweden’s power system.

CEO of Delta Capacity, Patrik Hes, remarked on the swift pace required for the Nordic energy transition, stating, “Sweden boasts substantial renewable energy resources, yet it lacks sufficient flexibility to meet demand. Ånge offers this flexibility, providing 160 MWh of storage that was delivered in just over a year.” He further asserted that the energy transition cannot wait, setting ambitious goals for further projects.

The project also demonstrates effective collaboration with several suppliers, including Stenger Ibsen Construction, Rejlers, and Green Power Monitor. Electricity transactions for the Ånge facility will be managed continuously by Centrica Energy.
