Shinya Nakazato's 'A Wall In Between' Exhibition at Vertigineux
In a captivating exploration of the boundary between the material and spiritual realms, the jewelry brand tmh. presents the solo exhibition, 'A Wall In Between,' featuring the intricate work of artist Shinya Nakazato. Set in the unique art space Vertigineux, this exhibition invites visitors to traverse the complex dialogue between perception and reality through Nakazato's innovative new pieces.
Concept of the Exhibition
Drawing from his diverse experiences in photography, sculpture, and painting, Nakazato's latest works challenge the viewer's understanding of the act of seeing and being seen. The concept revolves around the idea of the 'wall' or 'façade' that stands between these two worlds, bringing forth a visual language that speaks to the emotional layers we inhabit as urban dwellers.
By re-structuring forms derived from past sculptural work and drawings onto plywood, Nakazato creates abstract collages that evoke urban graffiti, symbolizing the emotional residue that layers the structure of our cities. These diorama-like objects serve not just as artistic expressions but act as catalysts encouraging a re-examination of our sensory perceptions.
Artist's Reflection
In his own words regarding the exhibition, Nakazato mentions:
“In the past, I created a box to express a state of mind. From that small space, I envisioned a multidimensional world. It reminded me of a façade that obstructs that space, a structure with an entrance and small windows acting like a wall that divides. On this side of the wall, I captured the traces of my existence in abstract expression and continue to create, inspired by the untapped possibilities on the other side.”
This introspective quote highlights Nakazato's journey and the emotional depth embedded in his work. The crevices and barriers we navigate serve as reflections of both personal and collective experiences, embodied within the fabric of the city.
Bridging Art and Thought
Tomohiko Furuta, the mastermind behind tmh., describes Vertigineux as a platform to visualize the relationship between thought and objects. His passion for collecting old artifacts, imbued with traces of personal history and memory, informs the creations at tmh., where jewelry transcends mere adornment to become a medium interlinking inner worlds and the outer reality.
Vertigineux embodies the extension of this creative process, allowing for diverse encounters among artists that spark new senses and ideas. Through shared experiences, Furuta hopes to cultivate a deeper connection with the visitors.
