Seaspan Unveils the Largest Dual-Fuel LNG-Powered Carrier for Cars and Trucks
Seaspan Welcomes the Glovis Lighthouse
Seaspan Corporation, a prominent independent owner and operator in the maritime sector, recently announced the launch of the Glovis Lighthouse, a pioneering addition to its fleet. This vessel is remarkable not only for its size—capable of carrying 10,800 CEU (Car Equivalent Units)—but also for its state-of-the-art dual-fuel LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas) propulsion system. This announcement signifies a major milestone in maritime logistics, particularly in the transport of cars and trucks.
Key Features of the Glovis Lighthouse
The Glovis Lighthouse is notably one of the few ships globally designed to exceed a capacity of 10,000 CEU, making it the largest of its kind in the world. Constructed in collaboration with Hyundai Glovis, a leader in automotive logistics, the ship is built with 14 decks, including four liftable decks, and features advanced ramp systems. These design elements enhance loading capacity and flexibility, aiming to reduce emissions intensity for each vehicle transported.
One of the standout features of the Glovis Lighthouse is its advanced dual-fuel LNG engine, which is projected to lower CO₂ emissions by approximately 24% compared to traditional fuels. This vessel not only meets but surpasses existing regulatory standards for energy efficiency, marking a significant step towards sustainability in shipping.
Environmental Commitment
The vessel is equipped with the latest generation of engine and fuel systems, including a shaft generator designed to maximize overall operational efficiency while minimizing methane emissions. These innovations position the Glovis Lighthouse among the most environmentally friendly Pure Car and Truck Carriers (PCTCs) presently operational. Furthermore, the ship is designed to be compatible with alternative fuels such as methanol and ammonia, supporting long-term emission reduction strategies as these fuels become more widely available.
A Step Forward for Maritime Logistics
According to Bing Chen, Chairman, President, and CEO of Seaspan, the delivery of the Glovis Lighthouse represents a significant achievement and clear evidence of Seaspan's capability to deliver world-class assets on a large scale. He stated, "This ship sets a new benchmark in the PCTC market—merging size, efficiency, and readiness for energy transition to help our customers become frontrunners in the next era of automotive logistics."
The Glovis Lighthouse has been leased to Hyundai Glovis under a long-term time charter agreement, emphasizing Seaspan's commitment to fostering partnerships that align technical innovation with a reliable, long-term asset deployment.
Kun Li, Chief Commercial Officer of Seaspan, remarked, "By integrating size, loading flexibility, and the adaptability to transition to new fuels, this series of vessels is strategically positioned to support the long-term evolution of global automotive supply chains."
