Kaggle Master Rint's Hirotaka Toh's Achievement in ECG Image Competition

Rint's Hirotaka Toh Achieves Gold in Kaggle Competition

In an impressive feat, Hirotaka Toh, a member of Rist Inc., has claimed a gold medal in the internationally recognized Kaggle competition titled "PhysioNet - Digitization of ECG Images." This competition was held from October 21, 2025, to January 22, 2026, and aimed to reconstruct digital signals from electrocardiogram (ECG) images while minimizing interference from factors like image distortion and noise.

The competition drew significant participation, with 8,684 contestants across 1,428 teams, showcasing the high level of competition. Toh's outstanding performance placed him third overall, propelling him into the prestigious rank of Kaggle Master.

Competition Overview

The focus of the PhysioNet competition was the extraction of waveform pixel positions from ECG images. Given that the target waveform lines are exceptionally thin, along with challenges posed by image noise such as dirt or blurriness, Toh had to innovate his model training to ensure stable extraction under these conditions.

Technical Challenges

Toh stated that one of his main challenges was to effectively reduce the variability in images while ensuring both segmentation and signal reconstruction remained consistent. The output of his segmentation model provides pixel location information, which was crucial for correcting waveform positions and interpolating any missing segments.

“Handling the significant image variations while maintaining the stability of both segmentation and signal reconstruction was no small feat,” Toh commented.

Knowledge Application

Toh believes that the valuable insights gained from this competition can extend to other operations at Rist, particularly in areas like Optical Character Recognition (OCR) and document understanding. He emphasized that the ability to extract essential information reliably despite noise contributes directly to stabilizing quality. A noteworthy strategy was to geometrically correct images to address distortions, which he found especially beneficial in improving the accuracy of document readings.

Becoming a Kaggle Master

Toh expressed gratitude for achieving the rank of Kaggle Master, stating, “This experience was not just about competition; it was a learning journey through hypothesis testing and iterative improvement.” He plans to leverage the knowledge acquired from participating in this competition to address real-world challenges faced by clients effectively.
