LanzaJet Selects Wilton International for Project Speedbird

In a significant leap towards sustainable aviation, LanzaJet has announced the selection of Wilton International in Teesside, England, as the site for its next production facility, Project Speedbird. This dynamic initiative marks a notable collaboration with Sembcorp Utilities (UK) Limited, aiming to produce more than 90,000 tons (approximately 30 million gallons) of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) and renewable diesel annually.

The British government’s Advanced Fuels Fund is set to support Project Speedbird, which is anticipated to bring substantial economic benefits to the region. Crucially, it is expected to create around 30 highly-skilled, long-term jobs within LanzaJet. More importantly, it will potentially decrease net carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 230,000 tons each year, equivalent to the emissions generated by around 26,000 domestic flights from British Airways.

Jimmy Samartzis, CEO of LanzaJet, emphasized that the strategic location and advanced infrastructure of Wilton International were key factors in its selection. He noted that this project underscores the pivotal role of Teesside in the UK’s energy transition and its ongoing industrial decarbonization efforts. The project is set not only to enhance the region’s status as a leader in alternative energy production but also to contribute significantly to the UK’s clean energy ambitions.

The collaboration with British Airways is instrumental in establishing a local supply chain for SAF, which is essential in reducing net carbon emissions throughout the aviation sector's lifecycle. Using LanzaJet’s proprietary Alcohol-to-Jet (ATJ) technology, previously demonstrated in Freedom Pines Fuels based in Georgia, USA, Project Speedbird will produce SAF derived from sustainably sourced ethanol. This innovation not only strengthens the local economy but also fosters crucial partnerships within the region, enhancing its economic prospects.

Carrie Harris, British Airways’ Sustainability Director, expressed enthusiasm about LanzaJet's selection of Wilton International, marking a crucial milestone in scaling up the production of sustainable aviation fuel in the UK. She emphasized that SAF is vital in achieving the airline’s net-zero targets by 2050 and highlighted the project’s potential in supporting local communities while creating green jobs.
