LTS and JAXA Collaboration on Satellite Data Utilization
Overview of the Project
Tokyo-based LTS Corporation (President: Hiroaki Kabashima) has announced its selection, in collaboration with OKI Electric Industry Co., Ltd., for a project under the Space Strategy Fund supported by the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA). The project, titled
Development and Global Deployment of Next-Generation Infrastructure Monitoring System through Close Coupling of Satellites and Ground Sensors, is aimed at addressing the increasing social challenges posed by natural disasters and aging infrastructure.
Background and Objectives
As climate change accelerates, events such as landslides and subsidence are becoming increasingly frequent and severe around the globe. Coupled with the rapid urbanization and underground development, aging infrastructure has risen as a critical societal issue. It's known that many of these disasters exhibit detectable signs through millimeter-scale surface deformations before they occur. However, traditional satellite observation data has limitations in terms of observation frequency and accuracy, and integration with ground sensor data and existing inspection records has not progressed sufficiently.
To tackle these challenges, the project aims to develop advanced AI algorithms that will tightly integrate satellite data, IoT sensor data from the ground, and existing inspection and investigation records owned by operators. The goal is to create a next-generation monitoring system capable of early detecting infrastructure anomalies, which would facilitate a shift from reactive maintenance to preventative preservation strategies. The ultimate vision includes global outreach, particularly targeting markets in Turkey and Southeast Asia.
Role of Each Company
OKI Electric Industry Co., Ltd. (Lead Institution)
OKI Electric will leverage its extensive experience from operations at around 1,000 locations across Japan to acquire high-quality ground observation data and ensure quality management. Additionally, they will serve as the overall coordinator of the project and facilitate partnerships with overseas collaborators.
LTS Corporation (Collaborating Institution)
LTS has been developing technologies in satellite data analysis for over a decade. In 2024, it plans to establish a subsidiary, ME-Lab Japan, specializing in satellite and meteorological data analysis. LTS's responsibilities in this project involve researching and developing AI algorithms to integrate satellite data with ground IoT sensor data. Furthermore, LTS will also drive the construction of a business model for the global deployment of this system.
About the Space Strategy Fund
The Space Strategy Fund was established based on a space technology strategy outlined by JAXA. This fund aims to support the development, demonstration, and commercialization of space technology by private enterprises and universities, strengthening the technology foundation and expanding the market within the space industry.
