Saving Young Lives: The Importance of Vaccinations for Children in Developing Countries

Protecting Lives: The Mission of JCV

Every day, around 4,000 children around the world succumb to infectious diseases such as polio and tetanus, leading to a heartbreaking annual toll of approximately 1.5 million. In response to this urgent issue, the Japan Committee for Vaccines for Children (JCV), a certified NPO, collaborates with UNICEF and local healthcare professionals to deliver vital vaccinations to children in developing countries. Through the initiative known as "Child Vaccination Support," JCV aims to safeguard as many young lives as possible.

Since its establishment in 1994, JCV has consistently strived to provide vaccinations, delivering a remarkable total of over 139 million doses to children. This year, JCV is participating in the April Dream campaign, an initiative promoting the sharing of dreams on April 1st. The dream we seek to realize is the prevention of child mortality due to vaccine-preventable diseases.

The Stark Reality of Vaccine-Preventable Deaths

In Japan, vaccinations against diseases such as polio, measles, and tetanus are available for free, allowing children to grow up healthy. However, in many developing nations, these diseases remain a daily threat, robbing countless children of their lives and smiles. The World Health Organization revealed that each day, an alarming 4,000 children under five die from vaccine-preventable infections, and the staggering annual loss of life reaches 1.5 million.

JCV’s Child Vaccination Support: A Lifeline for Children

In 2025, JCV plans to provide vaccines and related supplies worth approximately ¥117,745,176 in four countries: Myanmar, Laos, Bhutan, and Vanuatu. This vital support aims to combat the ongoing health crises facing children in these locations.

Here’s a closer look at the support details for 2025:

Support Details by Country

Country Amount (¥) Content Description
---------------------
Myanmar 32,821,865 Vaccines (e.g., oral and inactivated polio vaccines for about 9,000 kids), cold chain supplies, syringes, technical assistance, etc.
Laos 33,206,533 Vaccines (e.g., 350,000 doses of oral polio vaccines, 310,000 doses of BCG, and 70,000 doses of hepatitis B).
Bhutan 21,973,078 Vaccines (e.g., 40,000 doses of oral polio, 42,000 doses of BCG, 37,50 doses of MMR).

Various Ways to Get Involved

There are multiple ways to assist in the "Child Vaccination Support" initiative. Companies can partner by donating a dose of vaccine for every product sold, while individuals can support through cash donations or collecting used postcards, stamps, and plastic bottle caps. Every small effort counts. For instance, each polio vaccine costs only about 20 yen, while MMR vaccines are approximately 280 yen. Thus, even your simple contributions can lead to significant impacts.
