Strengthening Suicide Prevention Initiatives for Children and Youths in Japan
In response to the alarming trend of increasing suicides among children and youths during the periods following school vacations, the Japanese government has recognized the urgent need to enhance suicide prevention measures. Reports indicate that in 2023, the number of suicides among elementary through high school students reached a record high, prompting a concerted effort from various government sectors.
Starting from August, the government will launch a focused awareness campaign aimed at preventing suicides among children and youth. This initiative follows the implementation of several new policies and the revision of existing laws targeting child welfare and suicide prevention. The “Basic Act on Suicide Prevention” has been fully enacted since April 2023, emphasizing the importance of a holistic approach to suicides involving the entire society.
Government Collaboration
Multiple ministries, including the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare, the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, and the Cabinet Office, are collaborating for this initiative. This unified approach will involve a series of targeted activities designed to enhance awareness and provide resources for children and youths at risk.
One significant initiative includes the designation of an intensive period from August 20 to September 9, during which various promotional materials will be disseminated. This includes creating informative cards, stickers, and electronic posters that outline available counseling services aimed at encouraging open conversations about mental health struggles.
