Colombia's Historic Renewable Energy Project Tapped by President Petro

President Gustavo Petro's Vision for Renewable Energy

Recently, a landmark event unfolded in Colombia as President Gustavo Petro graced a ceremony at a refinery near Cartagena, where he signed a JA Solar module to commemorate the completion of an innovative photovoltaic (PV) project. This groundbreaking initiative is the first of its kind in Latin America, spotlighting the growing aspirations for renewable energy in traditional industrial sectors.

The project, boasting an impressive capacity of 23MW, was exclusively equipped with PV modules from JA Solar and was constructed by PowerChina at the Cartagena Refinery operated by Ecopetrol, Colombia's state oil company. Ecopetrol’s CEO, Ricardo Roa, referred to the undertaking as a major step in the transition from traditional fossil fuels to cleaner energy alternatives.

During the inauguration, President Petro did not hold back his enthusiasm, labeling the project a "milestone with far-reaching implications for the country’s energy landscape." He articulated a vision for expanding similar projects nationwide, underlining the significance of integrating renewable energy in conventional settings. Petro extended his gratitude to JA Solar and other participating Chinese companies, praising their contributions of advanced technology and quality products which are vital in the push towards a more sustainable energy framework.

This ambitious project serves as a testament to JA Solar’s unwavering commitment to promoting renewable energy solutions across Latin America. The company has been instrumental in several key achievements in the region. In 2023, JA Solar aligned with Solatio, one of Brazil's leading PV developers, to supply 1.2GW of solar panels for the Cassiolândia and Paranaíba Power Stations in Mato Grosso do Sul. This collaboration was pivotal in the development of over 4GW across a series of projects spearheaded by Solatio.

Furthermore, in Chile, JA Solar powered the largest single-unit PV project, the 480MW CEME1 PV Power Station, launched in 2024. This installation now plays a vital role in encompassing 10% of the country’s renewable energy capacity.

Enhanced by its market performance, JA Solar bagged the titles of
